Should everything have AI? Which businesses need AI?

IMHO, not every business needs AI.

People seem to include the word AI in almost everything these days. Its slapped onto fridges, toasters, and almost any SaaS product you find today.

You don't need AI if rule-based logic is enough for your business. And I am talking about situations where the rules are well understood.

For example, think about a toaster.

If a toaster is only supposed to toast, and not have a deep conversation with you, a traditional software program will do the job just fine using simple rule-based logic.

This is true even if the toaster uses voice commands. Simple machine learning programs can handle voice recognition—you don’t need full-scale AI for that.

So, do you have a business problem without clear, well-defined and a limited set of rules?

If you do, that’s when AI might actually be the right solution.

Here’s the smartest way to roll out AI in your organization.

(and save yourself a lot of heartbreaks)

Organizations are applying the same AI tool to hundreds of micro-tasks across their massive organization.

It forces their entire workforce to change their way of doing work, but leads to only incremental gains.

The better way to maximize ROI over time with AI is to focus on your top 3 challenges and solve them one by one with AI, instead of spreading AI across hundreds of tiny use cases.

That’s how you get 300-400% ROI, not just a fairly decent 10-20%.

Think of bowling—if you hit the central pin, the rest fall. In business, use the most powerful weapon in the arsenal, AI, to solve the biggest problem first, and everything else follows.

Have you ever wondered why elephants are not as smart as humans, even though elephants have larger brains?

So why do people assume that making AI smarter should always means building bigger models—so large that they require thousands of GPUs, massive data centers, and so much energy that they need nuclear reactors to power them?

Hey, its Swarb here. I develop AI for my clients that benefits their business.

Today, I want to leave you with a thought that might one day shape how you use AI in your business.

Smartness is not about size—it’s about design. Intelligence comes from how neurons are wired and how they adapt, not just how many there are.

The same applies to AI.

So if you're using AI to solve an important problem in your business, remember this: The smartest, most creative things in the world aren’t the biggest—they’re the best designed.

Should countries really be spending 2% of their GDP on massive data centers just to build ever-larger AI models?

Or should the focus be on designing smarter, more efficient AI instead?

Do you have a favorite book that taught you something truly valuable?

Hey, it's Swarbhanu here. I develop AI for my clients that benefits their business.

Today, I will tell you about the power of informal collaborations.

If I had to pick my all-time favorite book on scientific discovery, it would be The Double Helix by James Watson, who uncovered the structure of DNA.

It shows how informal collaboration drives breakthroughs—key insights sparked by casual conversations, spontaneous interactions leading to big discoveries.

Two rival teams, competing yet building on each other's findings. Never discouraged by mistakes.

Maybe we need more of that today. What do you think?

I bought some apples yesterday, found several that were too sour, or not ripe enough. Three apples were rotting inside.

Buying vegetables can be as tricky. You spend too much time trying to decide which ones are fresh or, at least, not rotting.

Bigger households than me and big businesses have more reasons to be upset... they lose billions.

Is there AI to calibrate the freshness of fruits and vegetables? Maybe one that can tell you how fresh is it? As in days?

There was an AI company that used images to detect rotten potatoes, but a family member told me that bad potatoes are in fact the easiest to spot.

On the other hand, pomegranates, apples, cucumbers and many other fruits and vegetables are very very deceptive. They look shiny on the outside but can pack an unpleasant surprise.

How about AI? Can it solve this?

Would you not like to have a mobile phone app that can tell you instantly whether the pomegranate you are holding at the grocery store is rotten inside?

Somethings to think about...
