Even the best drivers need seatbelts and airbags. Some things, like distracted drivers or poor conditions, are out of their control.

Your technology backups are the same way. They’re not a sign that your security is weak or your business is in danger, but bad days are out of your control.

If an airbag in your car gets recalled, you wouldn’t wait to get it fixed, and you shouldn’t wait to test your data backup and recovery plan.

At a roulette table, your odds of winning are 37:1. The only place those odds are a breath of fresh air is compared to the odds of untested backups protecting your business.

Set it and forget it strategies, old procedures and exposed backup locations are inviting disaster.

These strategies failing isn’t bad luck; it’s carelessness that can be exploited.

It’s a roulette wheel that can never be won because the house is incentivized to take advantage of poor planning.
