Your best client is probably one quiet month away from cancelling, and you won't see it coming.
Most people think the hard part is winning the client. When I quit my dietary job, I had $2,500 to my name and landed my first retainer client within a week. That felt like the finish line.
It wasn't. The sale is day one. A retainer is a decision the client makes again every single month.
After working with 500+ owners and businesses, the pattern is simple. Clients rarely leave because the work was bad. They leave because they can't point to what the work did. Silence reads as nothing happening, even when plenty is happening.
Here is what keeps your work from going unnoticed:
1. Send a one-page recap every month. Three wins, one miss, one next step. Plain language, no dashboard they never open.
2. Tie every number to a business outcome. Not "reach went up." Try "four more booked calls than last month."
3. Call out the miss before they do. Owning it first builds more trust than a perfect report ever will.
4. Ask one question each month. "What is the one thing you want more of next month?" It shows you where their head is before they decide to leave.
5. Share a win they didn't ask about. A customer comment, a repost, a lead that came through. Small proof adds up.
Is it glamorous? No. It is also far cheaper than replacing a client every quarter, and a lot less stressful than starting every month at zero.
Winning attention gets you noticed. Keeping clients gets you paid.
Comment "KEEP" and I'll tell you which of those steps is your weak spot.
