In 1875, three years after designating Yellowstone as the world’s first national park, President Ulysses S. Grant established the second: Mackinac National Park. Today, around 84 percent of the island is protected as a state park. But the effects of its often-overlooked national park period are still evident, as vacationers continue to marvel at geologic wonders like Arch Rock and Sugar Loaf, explore sites from the War of 1812, and wander through buildings that are nearly as old as America itself.
