Cognoscenti Creative

Cognoscenti Creative Today's consumer is a collector. What he or she craves isn't "stuff," it's a story.

Cognoscenti Creative® is a Denver-based creative studio built on 15+ years of experience in the F&B, hospitality, lifestyle, design and architecture industries. Through images, narrative and thoughtful design, we transform exceptional products into objects of desire. The Italian term cognoscenti refers, in short, to "those who know" — trusted advisors whose opinions are founded on solid experience. Our boutique branding agency is built on 10+ years of professional experience in the fields of design, content marketing and creative strategy. Working with both emerging artisans and industry leading brands, we've observed a shift in the power structure of persuasion. The rise of social media and peer-to-peer recommendations has created an increasingly noisy marketplace, requiring companies to reconsider the way they grab our attention. Our holistic approach to brand identity, visual assets and written communications — executed by our principals, not a stable of freelancers — helps brands project a clear, concise message to attract their target audience.

Fall has always been our favorite season in Colorado, with many of the local tourist destinations quieting down in the beautiful shoulder months. So what better time to share this trip inspo from our clients at The Outrider Hotel in Manitou Springs, who have so beautifully integrated our brand into their in-person guest experience. From mugs and postcards, to signage and even interior design, it’s exciting to see the brand play such an instrumental role in the property’s sense of place, inviting guests to explore beyond the unexpected and to discover their own version of Colorado’s endless adventure.

So much of our work is influenced by the world of architecture and design, so when our friends at Studio Mesa asked us to help reimagine their brand identity, we were thrilled to collaborate. As with many successful entrepreneurs, co-founders Cameron and Jill had refined their aesthetic and approach over several years, eventually reaching a point where their work and their brand no longer felt aligned. Their approach to modern interiors is all about cultivating warm, inviting spaces, so we proposed a few different options that felt more character-driven than their previous branding. The team also found inspiration in the work of local artisans they often collaborate with, so in addition to new fonts and a bolder color palette, we added a hand-drawn icon that spoke to their appreciation of human craftsmanship.

There’s a conversation we have near-daily with clients and collaborators, but one we rarely talk about here: why we started our business and how it grew beyond the world of hotels and restaurants. So if you’re new to our work or simply wondering why we’re committed to staying small and handling all creative ourselves, here’s a bit of our story!

| We’ve been working on an all-day French F&B concept, drawing inspiration from classic script and block font pairings that adorn beloved Parisian cafés. Of course, translating French refinement for an American market requires some outside-the-box thinking, like ensuring the brand also exudes a sense of warm neighborhood hospitality. More to come...!

It happens often enough to be humorous: a client calls us to start a branding project because they need to choose paint colors. It’s an accurate representation of how branding can be treated as an afterthought in the development, architecture and interior design process. Yet if you speak to interior designers about their preferences (we called on our pal Megan from .arch.id to weigh in) you’ll learn that by waiting on branding, you’re often undermining your business’ aesthetic potential.

In our latest blog post, we dig into the benefits of bringing in branding early and how these parallel, collaborative processes can help create a more compelling final product. Read more: https://www.cognoscenticreative.com/news/aligning-brand-with-interior-design

The process of branding can sometimes feel abstract—a two-dimensional design for a theoretical concept. Yet our in-house backgrounds in hospitality allow us to anticipate the real-world, practical ways that a brand can come to life and even define the in-person experience of a restaurant, hotel or other lifestyle business. Suffice to say, we’ve loved seeing the rollout of the signage, menus, printed assets and merch at . Throughout our collaboration, we discussed the role that the brand would play in bringing color and personality into the space, and we’re thrilled to see those efforts shine through in these images.

As part of our ongoing brand support of Waymark Outdoor Design, we’ve been working on a series of photo shoots that bring a more lived-in, editorial feel to their existing library of real estate photography. Most recently, we photographed a luxurious retreat in Parker, Colorado capturing establishing shots of the pool and outdoor lounge areas, as well as smaller vignettes of landscaping, pathways and planting details. This shoot also gave us a chance to capture the truck wraps and lawn signage we developed for the brand, bringing a high design mindset to marketing elements that are often treated as afterthoughts.

“What impressed me most was [Cognoscenti Creative’s] collaborative process. They were incredibly receptive to feedback, welcomed discussion, and thoughtfully refined ideas throughout the project while still bringing fresh perspectives and creative solutions to the table. Every deliverable was well-considered, polished, and aligned with our objectives.

Beyond their talent and expertise, Carly and Lauren consistently went above and beyond. Their responsiveness, professionalism, and genuine investment in the success of our project made them feel like an extension of our own team. It’s rare to find a creative partner who combines strategic thinking, storytelling, design excellence, and outstanding client service so seamlessly.”

One of the challenges of working on Rosa’s Diner was to carefully balance the various influences that shape this distinct property. To achieve the charm of a diner aesthetic, we leaned into memorable fonts and a vivid color palette, evoking nostalgia without skewing too retro. The Latin flavors were subtly interwoven into the colors and floral patterns, while carefully avoiding any cultural clichés. At the same time, great consideration was given to the restaurant’s unique location in a historic D.C. row home, including a custom illustration that became prominent within the brand’s identity and iconography. A thorough brand positioning process was instrumental in calibrating these distinct elements, transforming what could have been conflicting details into an integrated brand identity.

Adjoining the Moxy hotel in downtown Washington D.C., Rosa’s Diner is an all-day neighborhood restaurant serving the distinct, yet overlapping needs of the local workforce, business travelers and leisure tourists. Speaking to both Americana nostalgia and the global flair that D.C.’s restaurant scene uniquely encompasses, its coffee, cocktail and food programs reimagine comfort classics with a touch of Latin flavor.

This fast-paced branding project encompassed not only design and identity work, but also a collaborative approach to the overall creative direction, helping to shape interior design concepts and on-site brand implementation. Yet most of all, our role was to help ensure the restaurant offered the feeling of an independent, family-run concept that and would eschew the more corporate feeling of many hotel restaurants.
