1959 Tweedle-Dee (top); ‘59 RI Tweedle-Dum. How many watts do you really need with tweed though? Less is more??

This Bassman was apparently “modded” by an “aspiring” amp tech, to put it politely. The screen grid resistors were replaced with poorly soldered-in carbon comp resistors, standing up and glued together with a big black glob of silicone for god knows what reason. Carbon comp resistors don’t add anything but noise anywhere in an amp except in a few very specific places where the voltage swing is high enough to push the resistors hard enough to produce harmonics — plate resistors in the stage just before the phase inverter, in this case. So this “mod” is absolutely and utterly pointless. The replacement resistors are at least loose enough to crackle when the amp is whacked. Being there’s potentially lethal voltage that can fly through these particular resistors, I’m glad I ended up with this amp and not someone else who may not have noticed this. Please don’t be an amateur amp tech, unless you’re ready to meet God or hit fast forward on someone else’s life!! Hoping I can sneak away from the bench for an hour to unload this shotgun sometime in the next month or so!

Fact: The Boss DM-3 Delay and the early run CE-2B Bass Chorus were the only Boss pedals to ever use the black and white “top hat” style k***s. Big ups to the capital G for gifting me the CE-2B 🤙🏼

The May BlackBox GIVEAWAY is here! All you have to do to enter to win a BlackBox Overdrive 2 Stage Pro Mod for FREE this month is: A) Comment the one pedal whose look is most iconic, or just flat out cool (and if you feel like it, tell me why... and don’t worry, simple designs are a-ok!); B) Tag two MUSICIAN friends who you think love guitar tone half as much as you do; and C) Like this post and make sure you’re following us so we can contact you when you win. On Sunday, May 30th, we’ll go live and pick a random winner. As always, double entries for the first 50 players to shoot their shot! Good luck!

A selection of my earliest pedal builds and prototypes. All of these ones were built between 2009 and 2013. Top right was one of my first ever — a Triangle Big M**f clone. It donated a k**b to a better cause at some point in its life. The pedal below it is a real spring reverb, with RCA jacks to accommodate a full-size spring tank. This was supposed to be built before the M**f, but my first attempt failed. It was too complicated for me at the time. Eventually I got her running. Top left is a Zendrive clone with a clipping voice switch. Top middle is the “Frankenbreaker”, which was the earliest prototype for what became the BlueLine (bottom left). For those who don’t know, the BlueLine was a hot-rodded Breaker-based drive with all the fixings, complete with hand-lain decals in the style of the New York City subway map, specifically the A/C train that ran near my apartment in Brooklyn where the pedal was designed. And bottom center is the prototype for what eventually became known as the BlackBox Overdrive. Some people assume it’s called the BlackBox because the BluesBreaker pedal was a black box as well, but it was really because I only had a stack of black enclosures to build them in, and I just stuck with that. Sort of just named itself when it came time. Seemed to have worked out ok. 🙂

Haven’t had time for much of much the past few weeks except for building, but looking forward to getting over this little mountain of work and having a bit of time to sit down and wire things like this together again
