Did you know that IBM began as a manufacturer of time recording devices? Originally, the Bundy Manufacturing Company began manufacturing time clocks in 1891. They later merged to become the International Time Recording Company, which merged again and became the Computing Tabulating Recording Company, which became IBM.

The round-face design and the use of increments based on sixty for clocks dates back into ancient history. The Sumerians were the first to divide the circle into 360 degrees (their numerical system was based on intervals of six), making it logical to use a round surface as a measure of time.

Clocks are called clocks because they originally marked time by sounding bells, not by markings on the face of a dial. The French word for bell is “cloche”, and the term rang a bell, even after numerical dials were added.

A "Crystal Regulator" is a type of clock that was popular at the turn of the 20th century. Characterized by a brass frame forming a rectangular box with glass on all 4 sides and often employing a mercury pendulum for temperature compensation. The name "regulator" is a bit of a misnomer as they do not meet the technical standards of a true regulator.

Many people own or have seen mantel clocks referred to as "humpback" or "camelback" or even sometimes "Napoleon's hat". The proper term for these clocks is "tambour".

Invented in 1883 the flying pendulum/flying ball/ "Ignatz" clock is a clock using a small metal ball on the end of a string as a pendulum. The ball swings in a circular motion to one side where it wraps around a brass post, unwraps and swings to a post on the other side repeating the motion. Notoriously poor timekeepers, the clocks crazy motion lead to the "Ignatz" nickname after a character in a the "Krazy Kat" comic.

Ever heard of a clock with an "open escapement"? Typically located on the face of the clock, an "open escapement" reveals the escape wheel and verge, moving parts of the clock works not usually visible.

American Kitchen Clocks sometimes referred to as "gingerbread" clocks, were a very popluar style of clock in the U.S. in the mid to late 1800's through early 1900's. The advent of the scroll saw and wood pressing techniques made them easy to manufacture and therefore reasonably priced.
