With heavy hearts we share the news our mother Susan Louise Harris Clayton passed away on Tuesday afternoon. While mom had several health conditions through the years, she had been doing remarkably well in recent months and we are left feeling her sudden death was too soon.
My mom was one of the smartest and capable women I know. So many things I love today are because she nurtured those seeds in me - love of books, poetry, musicals, fine art, foreign languages, traveling the world, delight in all kinds animals, and they joy of children. She and dad were married 57 years and have only been separated 8 months since his passing. Together, they created our home and family that was wonderful place to grow up. She was immensely proud of Cassie and I, and to say she delighted in her grandchildren would be an understatement.
She shared her awe and reverence of the Lord with us and others her entire life. She recently completed reading a book club book about heaven - she was so excited to share what she was learning in it— and I know with out a doubt is she grateful to be there now.
It’s a new and strange feeling to have no earthly parents. Grateful for the people in our lives who stand in this space for us - who love, support, encourage Cassie, myself and my children. Grateful for our faithful and steadfast heavenly Father.
We will continue to miss them terribly. They lived full lives dedicated to faith and family. I am comforted to know they are both at peace and fully healed from the bodies that were failing them here.
A celebration of life service will be held in the Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church on Wednesday, June 26 at 3pm. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, Susan’s memory would be honored with a donation to the Girls Scouts of America.
