Security updates are easy to ignore until they interrupt access to the tools your business relies on.
Beginning October 20, 2026, Google will require 2-Step Verification for certain company-managed accounts accessing the Google Cloud and Firebase consoles.
This does not apply to every Google Workspace user. Gmail, Google Drive, Sheets, and Slides are not affected by this specific update, and users signing in through SSO are not included in this enforcement phase.
Businesses using Google Cloud or Firebase should take this opportunity to:
• Identify everyone with access to cloud projects
• Confirm which users have enabled 2-Step Verification
• Remove access belonging to former employees and vendors
• Review administrator, billing, and project permissions
• Test access before the October deadline
This is more than a login change. It is an opportunity to review who can access your organization’s cloud resources and whether they still need that access.
