This World Mental Health Day, we showed up differently across three of our campuses — and so did the people who joined us.

In Meridian, Mississippi, Justin Azbill stood in front of approximately 1,600 construction workers and told the truth about his own journey in his Mindset Readiness talk. There was a room full of people who felt less alone.

In El Mirage, Arizona, Erin Callinan, founder of Beneath The Brave, author of Beautifully Bipolar, led approximately 1,100 workers through her “Recognize. Ask. Connect.” presentation. She shared her own lived experience with bipolar disorder with the kind of humor, honesty and hard-earned wisdom that breaks through the armor that construction culture asks people to wear.

And in Village of Hoffman Estates Government, Charlie, the Village’s three-year-old chocolate Lab therapy dog and reigning good boy showed up for biofeedback sessions on our ORD campus and reminded everyone that sometimes the most powerful intervention is a really good hug. 🐾

All three were grounded in the same belief: mental health is construction safety. Construction workers die by su***de at rates among the highest of any industry. Making it normal to ask for help on the jobsite isn’t soft. It’s the work.

This Saturday is World Mental Health Day.

This week at our Meridian, Mississippi campus, we had the honor of hosting Justin Azbill, veteran, speaker and founder of the Mission Mindset Institute. He shared his story: the weight of the work, the weight of life, and how close he came to ending it. He shared it so others wouldn't have to carry theirs alone.

There were hugs. There were tears. There was a room full of people who felt seen.

Strong Minds, Safer Sites. That's our commitment because mental health is construction safety.

We're investing in a new wellness space at the Village of Hoffman Estates Government Health and Human Services Department. It's the first dedicated room for group therapy and community programming in the department's 45-year history.

The space uses biophilic design. Natural materials, living plants, earth tones and a built-in water fountain to create an environment where people feel safe to ask for help.

And keeping a very close eye on construction progress? Charlie, the department's three-year-old chocolate Lab therapy dog and honorary PAWject Manager. 🐾👷

This month, members of the Ascension Illinois Behavioral Health team spoke with our on-site workers about mental health, su***de prevention and substance use — because workplace safety means looking out for the whole person. Grateful to Power Construction and its partners for making space for this conversation.

You don't have to be a mental health professional to make a difference. Sometimes it starts with noticing a change in someone and asking: "Are you okay?"

When Compass joined the El Mirage community, we knew that the Northwest Valley YMCA was going to be our neighbor, so we asked a question: what do your members need most?

The answer was one word: shade.

We're honored to fund a permanent shade structure over the outdoor basketball court — giving El Mirage families back a space that Arizona's summer takes away for months at a time. It's the community's most-requested park amenity, and it means preschoolers get outside, coaches keep practice on schedule and a court built for this community actually gets used. 🏀
