Two protocols came up at the Radix IoT booth at Yotta that rarely surface in facility monitoring conversations: Redfish and NTP.

Both come from the IT side of the data center. Redfish is the standard servers use to report their own health, power draw and temperature. NTP keeps clocks in step across systems, which starts to matter the moment a team tries to line up an alarm on the cooling plant with an event in a rack.

Operators asking about them at a facilities booth says something about how data centers are being run. The cooling plant, the power chain and the hardware they serve are increasingly treated as one operation, and the teams responsible want the data to line up the same way.

Thank you to Keystone Engineering Group for hosting Jasmine Brooks and Jon Cummings at their headquarters in Frazer, Pennsylvania.

Fifteen engineers joined, eleven in the room and four online.

Keystone runs design engineering and automation and controls under one roof, which made for a genuinely technical conversation. Most of the questions were about protocols, and how data moves between systems that were never designed to talk to each other. One point stayed with us. An engineer said the hardest part is often not the technology, it is making the case to the operators who have to live with it. A fair challenge, and a useful one to hear.

A controls contractor asked whether each of his roughly one hundred contractors could be restricted to only their own devices inside a shared instance.

His concern is commercial. A hundred companies working in one system, each of them able to see what the others are doing on site, each of them competing for the next job.

Platform evaluations tend to treat access control as a security requirement, which pushes it late in the process, onto a different team, after the team has settled the capability questions. For this buyer it decides whether the platform is usable at all. If the boundary does not hold, he cannot put his contractors in it, and everything else on the evaluation sheet stops mattering.

Underneath that sits the same thing operators describe about their existing vendors, pointed at us. Losing control of who reaches their own readings.

We are at AEE World in Orlando this week, and the best conversations have all started the same way.

Their old devices still work. That is the whole issue. Equipment doing its job perfectly well, speaking protocols that nothing modern reads, so the only way to see any of it is to run several systems side by side and stitch the picture together yourself.

Nobody has enterprise-wide visibility. Not because the data is missing, but because it is scattered across the systems needed to reach it.

Replacing equipment that works is not a monitoring strategy. Most specifications answer the retention question with one number. On a real site there are usually four answers running at once and they do not agree with each other.

An equipment manufacturer named four separate drivers on a call with us. Regulatory compliance requiring retention for the life of the site at a defined resolution. OEM warranty claims requiring three or six months at a specific sampling rate. Debugging, on its own timeline. Live monitoring, which needs almost nothing kept at all.

Each of those wants a different sampling rate as well as a different window, so a single policy either overspends on everything or fails the strictest requirement. Today that site keeps everything forever, because applying different rules to different data would require labeling they have not built.

The detail worth sitting with is who does the asking. During a warranty dispute, the party demanding the data is the equipment maker.

An engineering team walked us through an in-house monitoring architecture: a central message broker, a historian service, a time-series database, retention policies, cloud sync, and somewhere between 300 and 1,000 microservices.

Then they told us the person who decided to build it had left, and nobody wrote the reasoning down.

That is a different situation from the one most platform content addresses. These teams settled the question of whether to unify their data years ago, in code, and they now carry the maintenance cost of a system nobody currently at the company chose.

It shows up in three shapes. Teams who built a full stack and inherited it. Teams whose clients keep concluding they will just build their own. Contractors building a customer-facing app who want a middleware layer underneath rather than another front end.

The last one is worth naming separately. It is a request for the middle of the stack, with the interface staying theirs.

Mango by Radix IoT has been in production since 2011 and includes its own purpose-built time-series database. For a team maintaining a broker, a historian and a sync layer themselves, the comparison that matters is who is on call for that stack next year.
