Here's something most companies get wrong about AI in hiring. Candidates aren't distrustful because AI is involved. They're distrustful because it feels like a black box making decisions about their future with no visibility into how.

Here's something interesting. The last 15 candidate profiles I looked at for a role we have open right now? Every single one was an all star. Not most of them. All of them.

Is that a coincidence, or did the ones who weren't quite there just fall off somewhere along the way, maybe the questions got tough, maybe they weren't fully sure about it? Either way, the quality of people making it to my desk right now has been genuinely impressive.

Goldman Sachs just named the exact spots where AI is squeezing jobs. Is yours one of them?

Call centers stand out in particular. Employment in the industry is now 39% below trend in the U.S., 33% in Canada, and 27% in Germany. Goldman said this pattern shows that AI related employment pressure is already visible in industries where automation tools are available.

If you run more than one location, you've probably noticed this. Every manager says they follow the same hiring process, but in practice, it never quite looks the same from one location to the next.

Here's why. Two steps in a typical hiring workflow, resume triage and phone screen scheduling, are almost always manual. And manual means inconsistent. One manager might screen resumes the same day. Another might let them sit for a week or two.

That inconsistency isn't a people problem. It's a process problem, because these two steps were never actually standardized across locations.

Here's an old sales trick. Ask a salesperson how much they made last year, and the number you get back is almost always inflated. It's basically guaranteed.

Hiring has the same problem, just with more categories. Did they really go to school? Do they actually have that license? Those skills on the resume, are they real? It gets harder every year to verify any of it.

Here's something most hiring teams haven't caught onto yet. Job seekers are using AI to manipulate the AI reading their resumes.

Through prompt injection, candidates hide instructions using concealed or white text, invisible to a human reviewer, but fully readable to the AI processing the document. The goal is to get ranked more favorably or pushed straight to the next stage.

Duke University researchers analyzed roughly 200,000 real resumes and found at least 1% contained prompt injections designed to manipulate AI based screening. And the techniques keep getting more sophisticated, well beyond anything as obvious as "hire me."

So here's the real question. What happens when the technology evaluating candidates can be manipulated by the technology candidates are using?

Ever wonder if older generations actually use texting and messaging apps as much as everyone assumes? Look at the numbers. They do. It's not a generational thing anymore, it's just how people expect to communicate now.

Hiring hasn't really caught up to that yet. Some companies have added texting as an option, which helps, but it usually ends up being just another tool to manage instead of simply being the default way things work.
