A Bit of History: The Origins of Gold Rush Week
Long before European settlers arrived, Native American peoples—especially the Cherokee—knew about the gold hidden in these hills.
In fact, the name Dahlonega comes from a Cherokee word meaning “yellow” or “gold,” inspired by the rich gold deposits in the area.

In 1828, Benjamin Parks made the first major gold discovery right here in Lumpkin County.
This moment sparked the first major gold rush in the United States—even before the famous California gold rush of 1849!

To manage all the gold being found, the U.S. government opened a branch mint in Dahlonega in 1838, where actual gold coins were produced until the Civil War began in 1861.

The Start of Gold Rush Days
This festival began in 1954 as a celebration of Dahlonega’s gold-mining roots, Appalachian culture, and the beauty of the fall season.

Today, Gold Rush Days continues to honor that rich heritage every third full weekend in October, just as the leaves start to turn.

What to Look Forward To
There’s something for everyone at Gold Rush Days:

Over 300 artisan and craft booths set up around the Historic District and Public Square

Delicious food vendors and live Appalachian music

Historical demonstrations like gold panning and blacksmithing
