Allband Center for Education, Wildlife and Research

Allband Center for Education, Wildlife and Research ACEWR Allband Center for Education, Wildlife & Research (ACEWR) is bringing innovative technological approaches to historical rural community issues.

ACEWR is a nonprofit organization with a dynamic staff, cooperative membership, coalitions, property owners, camps, hunting clubs, and volunteers, working closely with a variety of partners, wildlife, forestry, and conservation groups across the state. We cater to biologists and environmental educators who look to technology to advance current research, increase efforts, and build on new opportuni

ties to preserve beautiful NE Michigan’s forests and wildlife, providing safe and protected habitats, fighting to eradicate disease, manage herds and forests, and minimize human interference, but promote hunting and fishing tourism, and economic growth. Keep our serene environment a safe and beautiful place to play and work, while protecting it for future generations. We are located in the 4-county area of Alcona, Oscoda, Montmorency, and Alpena, central NE Michigan. It is our privilege and honor to protect our lands and wildlife, promote our rural communities, and continue to sustain the world’s largest source of fresh water, the Great Lakes. Our projects range in scale from working with individual property owners to managing state-wide projects. We work together with community members and partners to facilitate plans and advance efforts through unlimited advanced technologies. Actions that reconnect streams, enhance wildlife habitat, improve forest health, control invasive species, protect water quality and more. Our mission is to teach, preserve, and enhance research and instill conservation ethics in the hearts of young and old, rich and poor. We welcome volunteers, internships, and new organization collaborations. We offer real‐world experiences, networking, and training opportunities in a number areas and industries, developing leaders and champions in our rural communities. Allband Center for Education, Wildlife, and Research is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and an equal opportunity provider.

Do not eat advisory!

As a result of recent testing by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Michigan DEQ, a ‘Do Not Eat’ advisory for deer has been issued in an area surrounding Clark’s Marsh in Oscoda Township. The map shown here highlights the area under the advisory. One of several deer tested in this area had a high level of PFOS within the muscle of the animal. For this reason, the advisory was put in place by DHHS to ensure public health safety and the DNR wanted to make sure hunters are aware. The state plans to test more deer in this area.

For additional information regarding this advisory, please take a moment to read the news release available here – https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-350-86469-481144--,00.html.

Wildlife viewing opportunities to get you through to the spring!

"This winter Michigan has seen an uptick in snowy owls, both of which are currently widespread. The best way to find snowy owls is to locate your largest treeless expanse, preferably hundreds of acres or more without trees, and search carefully for a white blob on the ground or on a low perch. Snowy owls occasionally take to telephone poles and trees out in the open."

As winter hangs on for its final few weeks before spring, wildlife viewing opportunities abound for those who know where to look. Here are some tips for escaping cabin fever the next several weeks.
