WE ARE CLOSED INDEFINITELY FOR REMODELING AND REORGANIZATION

We at Abraxas Video want to thank all of our customers (especially our regulars) for their years of support. When we opened up back in 2005 with our relatively small collection, you welcomed us and kept us afloat. Since then, with your help, we have grown that modest collection to the 2nd largest collection of titles in Oregon! You trusted us to bring in the hottest and most interesting titles each week. Unfortunately, the last two to three years have made it abundantly clear that, owing to the current state of physical media, we cannot continue to do that anymore. The sad fact is that most of what you want to see is not (and may not ever be) available on disc. Many Oscar and Emmy winning titles (as well as a great many indie titles) are being produced directly by streaming services, and we feel that this is a trend that is only going to increase with time. For that reason, we are closing our doors for a while.

But Don't worry; the times are changing and we intend to change with them. We will be back after our remodel as "Abraxas Video & More"!

THE CHANGES YOU CAN EXPECT
While we will no longer be able to bring you new titles, we will still be able to connect you with many of the older titles you may not be able to get anywhere else. The rental process will be changing, but the video portion of our business will remain alive and well; it just will not be the core of what we do anymore.

We will be downsizing our collection rather extensively. This is going to make it a bit harder to get some of the more obscure material, but it does mean that there will be a lot more material available for sale for collectors out there.

And then there is the "& More" part. We will be expanding into some other markets. When we reopen, we will also be carrying BACK ISSUE AND NEW RELEASE COMICS, NOVELTY AND COLLECTIBLE PLUSH TOYS, NERDY APPAREL, PROPS, FANTASY COINS, GAMES, 3D PRINTING, AND OTHER FUN COLLECTABLE ITEMS.

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO HAPPEN?
It is happening now, but in answer to how long will it take, we don't know. Though we have already laid the groundwork, a transition of this type is going to take time. As the new year starts, we'll be visibly working on it.

Once again, we wanted to thank the community for what has been a good run as a traditional video rental store. We invite you to join us when we reopen our doors.

Please feel free to follow us at Abravas Video on Facebook for additional updates.

PSA: We decided to let this piece of Oregon History go. Less extreme than the title implies, this is the story of the Oregon Rideout court case staring Micky Rourke, when he was still young. If you would like it, this is likely your only chance as there are literally no other copies to be had as far as we are aware. If a local gets it, we offer store pickup to save on shipping. While you are there, check out some of the other listings to see where some of the sale items from the front shelf ended up. Good luck.

Good news! After a few days of nail-biting suspense and a lot of frustration, we have managed to recover all of our records from the old dead computer and migrate them to the new one. There is still a lot of catching up and a fair bit of work to do, but we should be open again starting Thursday 12/9.

Edit: The computer has been replaced, and the new one is up and running. We reopened our doors today.

The computer is not just down, it is dead. We will keep people posted as things develop. We are currently working on trying to get a new computer up and running so we can try to recover more than a decade and a half worth of records. We will need to be closed as we work on this, but as the picture says, if you nave non rental related questions, feel free to call or message and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

We would like to thank our customers for their understanding as we have been closed these last several days in order to comply with state quarantine guidelines. I am pleased to announce that, following the end of the quarantine period and negative tests all around, Abraxas Video will be re-opening our front browsing section on Friday October 8th! We will be there between 4pm and 6pm with a collection of the most recent releases and classic titles. Thank you again for your patience and see you then.

Abraxas Video will be closed for the next several days in accordance with Oregon COVID 19 isolation guidelines.

Firstly, I would like to assure our customers that I have been observing safe practices at the store and am negative for COVID 19 at the time of this post. If you have done business with us recently, you need not be concerned.

That said, members of my immediate family have recently tested positive for COVID 19, and my proximity to them during their period of quarantine is such that, if our store were to be open, it would pose a risk to our customers. We will, therefore, be closed for at least the next several days.

At this point, we cannot give a specific date on which we will reopen, as that date will change depending on how circumstances progress. What we can say is that we will follow all guidelines, in order to assure that, when we do reopen, we are able to do so safely.

In the meantime, I will be dropping by to check in videos from the return box and making sure that we are still up to date on current titles.

I want to thank the community for their support and understanding and assure you that we will back up and operational as soon as we are able: offering you the widest collection of new and old release movies.

Spotlight: the Films of Christopher Bickel Pt 1
Theta Girl

A few years ago, a friend of mine sent my video store a message asking if we were going to get the film Theta Girl. I looked it up, and after a brief bit of research, ordered it. At the time, it was only available direct as a blu ray, but as I understand it, this film hit the film fest circuit pretty hard a bit later. Still no DVD, but the Blu ray is sitting on my shelf.

On to the film. Theta Girl is incredibly low budget but definitely a stand out in wired cinema. While the main premise, a drug that lets you see into other dimensions, is an old trope (John Dies At The End would be a good example of another successfully odd take on the idea) The style, ex*****on, and sometimes directionless weirdness of this film make it unique. The film is shot in a gritty/grainy style that reminds me of old Troma films more than it does the grind house vibe, and the gore and reliance on punk ethos makes that connection stronger. But even for troma, the gore is prtty outrageous. Though the pacing of party scenes is slow, the overall film flows pretty well.

What makes it strange though is the head scratching way it seems like it is making a profound point, but you’re not quite sure what it is. My best guess would be that if you try to take your orders from unknowable forces, you will end up doing some messed up stuff, but if you flip it off you get to chill with force ghosts.

Without the supernatural element, this would be a respectable splatter film, but the bird like David Bowie androgenoid god monster takes it to a whole other place.
My favorite part is that, unlike a lot of movies with a heavy beyond element, the question isn’t so much “is the Entity real” as it is “what game is the Entity playing?” And the focus isn’t on “how do we stop it” as it is on “why is it here and do we need to be concerned”. In that way it is a kind of laid back lovecraftian that I very much enjoyed. Also, the beyond element is heavy, but it does not overshadow the human story.

Now final thought. This movie will not change the way you feel about cinema, nor I think will it ever become a shining cultural jewel. It could certainly have been better, but it is a fun watch and I have not seen anything quite like it. For a first time effort on a micro budget, it is definitely more worthwhile than a lot of movies that cost millions to make.
