I recently serviced a Technics SL-1200 MK2 exhibiting significant motor control issues. From a cold start through to full operating temperature, the unit displayed erratic speed fluctuations, with the owner reporting the platter would occasionally move backward. Additionally, the electronic brake was completely non-functional; even with VR adjustments, the platter would simply free-spin to a stop.
The culprit? A failing AN6675 motor drive IC. Upon inspection, the original thermal paste had completely dried out, leading to chronic overheating and eventual chip damage. This is the sixth unit I’ve encountered this month with the same issue. While many "serviced" turntables look clean, the thermal management on the AN6675 and Q1 transistor is often neglected. As part of my standard restoration checklist, I always strip, clean, and apply fresh thermal compound to these critical components to ensure long-term reliability
