Happy SysAdmin Day!

If all of your IT problems are solved by a "friendly" IT guy/gal (hey sometimes we're grumpy too...you take calls from frustrated people all day and see how you feel(Frustrated by their IT...not by us, clearly)) then today is their day!

Hug your SysAdmin today.....or maybe don't. They aren't used to physical contact. results may vary. Unexpected system overloads may occur....perhaps a hardy "Thanks IT Guy/Gal!" will suffice....maybe a cake...or an energy drink.

Update: there is a big ripple-effect going on as well....see my comment below, but the power draws from this are causing large server farms/colocation facilities/what y'all would call "the cloud" to go offline.

Big MICROSOFT (not actually Microsoft's fault through) Outage: If you're using Crowdstrike as your EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response (new term for antivirus/antiransomware/antimalware)), don't reboot your PC. There is a bad update from crowdstrike that will cause your machine to blue screen on boot. They are working on it. If you already have the bluescreen, there is a possible workardound in the comments. no guarantees on it. and if you have bitlocker installed that makes it all the more difficult.

again, this is technically on the EDR vendor Crowdstrike NOT Microsoft. We don't use Crowdstrike for our customers. It's not a bad software (well until this), we just use something else.

Update: 7:15PM: Many Spectrum services are starting to come back online. There seem to still be some lagging effects on other providers. We'll hope those providers can get things going by morning. If your Spectrum is still down, reboot your modem.

If anyone wants to talk about backup internet connections 5G, Starlink, wISP, let me know. Lots of options available these days.

Spectrum and several other internet providers in South and Central Texas are down and have been since about 12:30. We're assuming a fiber cut somewhere, but no one is talking yet. Both our primary and secondary internet connections are down (fun fun) so we're operating off of t-mobile 5G for now. If you're mission critical, let me know and we can see about getting a 5G or Starlink internet over to you.

While strong passwords are important, they're not enough anymore. Hackers are getting more sophisticated, so you need an extra layer of security. ️

That's where 2FA (two-factor authentication) comes in! 2FA adds an extra step to the login process, usually a code from your phone or a fingerprint scan. This makes it much harder for hackers to steal your accounts, even if they get your password.

If it's not already turned on for your email accounts and anything related to finances, stop doomscrolling facebook right now and google how to turn 2FA or MFA on for whatever provider you use. It's a much better use of your time.

Stay safe online and boost your account security with 2FA!
