Tuesday Tip: Text from video

With iOS 16 you can now grab text from a video.

Just pause the video, zoom in, tap on the text, the selection will be impressively accurate.

This is great if you want to do a search with text that was in your video and if in a foreign country you can even translate the text.

Tuesday Tip: Schedule the Sending of Emails with Mail App

You can finally schedule the sending of emails right from the Mail app on Mac with MacOS13 Ventura.

This new feature is great if you want to send a particular email at a given time, whether it’s a birthday wish, anniversary reminder,or anything else that is time relevant.

After you compose your email in Mail app, look for the pulldown menu next to the send button, and choose when you want to send the email from the options.

Caution: You must have the Mac and Mail app open for email scheduling to work, so if you schedule something out to send two years from now, you’ll need to have your Mail app open then.

Tuesday Tip: Stage Manager with iPadOS16

Enable Stage Manager in Settings > Home Screen & Multitasking. Eligible iPads also have a Stage Manager icon in the Control Center. (Swipe down from the top right corner.)

Now you can start adding windows to your workspace. If you have a docked or Bluetooth keyboard, use the search keyboard shortcut (Command + Space) to find the app you want. Once its icon appears, drag it to your screen and the app will open as a window.

Hover over the window’s corners to adjust width and length. Resizing isn’t freestyle, like on a Mac. There are predetermined shapes and sizes. For example, you can turn your windows into four skinny columns, but you can’t make four equal Brady Bunch squares. Tap the three dots at the top of one of your app windows to quickly turn it full screen.

Also, some apps let you open more than one window. You can view multiple Safari websites side by side, for example, but only one Google Docs page at a time.

Tuesday Tip: Use Your iPhone as a Mac We**am

Your iPhone can be a We**am with Ventura MacOS 13

Assuming your iPhone is running iOS 16 or newer, you can use it as an HD we**am on your Mac with Continuity Camera.

Selecting the iPhone as the camera to use is really easy, though it may vary per app. Look for where ever the camera selection setting is, and choose your iPhone from the camera list. With Photo Booth you may need to plug it in with a cable the first time.

Tuesday Tip: Compact Safari Tab Bar

In early beta versions of macOS, Apple introduced a compact and unified Safari design that did away with the dedicated URL and search bar, instead letting any individual tab be used for navigation input. This design caused an outcry from many users, which led Apple to reinstate the original design in which the URL/search bar sits at the top of the Safari window, with your tabs arranged below it.
With Monterey MacOS 12, if you liked the Compact tab bar design, you can find it as an option in Safari -> Preferences.... Click the Tabs tab and select Tab Layout: Compact to turn on the original compact tab bar that merged everything together.

Tuesday Tip: Track your iPhone, even if it’s turned OFF

Find My iPhone is a great way to keep track a potentially lost device. But if someone powers off your stolen iPhone, it disables tracking. ‘Find My‘ may show your device’s last location (if you enabled ‘Find My’ in Settings), but that’s not much help.

With iOS 15, an iPhone that has been turned off will actually enter an ultra-low power state that keeps the Bluetooth beacon active, effectively turning your iPhone into an AirTag.

You will even see a little 'iPhone findable after power off' notice under the Slide to Power Off interface.

Tuesday Tip: Always Show Full-screen Menu Bar

In previous versions of macOS, launching an app in fullscreen mode automatically hides the menu bar, then you have to hover the mouse pointer over the top of the screen to reveal the menu bar. Now, in Monterey, you can force the menu bar to always remain visible while in fullscreen mode, along with all its menus and items.
To do so, go to System Preferences -> Dock & Menu Bar, and in the Dock & Menu Bar options, uncheck the box next to Automatically hide and show the menu bar in full screen.

Tuesday Tip:Change Mouse Pointer Color

With MacOS 12 Monterey, Apple has made it possible to change the color of the mouse pointer from the standard white outline and black fill, to pretty much any color combination you want.
To do so, go to System Preferences -> Accessibility, then look under "Vision" in the left column and click Display. Next Click the Pointer tab, and you'll find Pointer outline color and Pointer fill color settings. Click the color swatch to choose a custom color from the palette that appears. You can always click Reset to revert to the default colors.

Tuesday Tip: Right-click to Translate Text

The Translate feature from Safari is available system-wide in ‌macOS12 Monterey. Just select some text and right-click (Ctrl-click) to bring up the Translate option, which works with several languages.

translate
Not only can you read and copy the translated text, click the play button and you can get macOS to say it out loud so that you can better understand the verbal pronunciation.
