A website is a means to an end.

If it's built right, it almost disappears. You flow through it. You find what you came for. Everything is where it belongs. Pages load fast. The next step is obvious. You don't think about the site at all, because the site isn't asking you to.

That's what human-centered actually looks like. A quiet website, doing the work to include everyone who arrives and make the experience feel easy.

The loudest websites are usually the ones working hardest to get your attention. The quietest ones are the ones working hardest for you.

If you don't notice our work day to day, that usually means we did it right.

"Our content is good. Why isn't it showing up in search?"

The problem is that "good" and "findable" are two different things.

Search engines and AI tools don't read your website the way a person does.
They read structure: headings, hierarchy, internal links, page titles, metadata and they decide in seconds whether your page deserves to be surfaced for a given question.

If the structure is unclear, none of the writing matters.

AI search has grown up.

It's not rewarding sites that *look* optimized anymore.

It's rewarding sites that are genuinely useful…for REAL people.

Which means the organizations chasing algorithm signals at the expense of their audience are quietly losing on both fronts. Visitors leave. And increasingly, AI tools can tell the difference too.
Our new blog is about why human-first design isn't the alternative to AI optimization. It's what AI optimization should have been all along.

A few weeks ago, we told a client their new site would be live in three weeks.

It went live in under two.

Not because we cut corners. Because they sent us their content when we asked for it and trusted us to move when the road was clear.

Here's something people don't always realize when they start a website project: you're not hiring us to build your site *for* you.

You're partnering with us to build it *together*.

We hold the strategy, the design, the code, the process.

You hold the story, the details, the decisions only you can make.

When both sides show up, the timeline shrinks.

We say "partnership" a lot around here, and this is what we mean by it. A great launch isn't the result of one team working harder. It's the result of two teams working in rhythm.

Every Friday there's a meeting on our calendar called the Team Debrief.

No agenda. No screen shares. Work talk is basically banned.

We're a remote team spread from Columbia all the way out to California so there's no water cooler, no coffee runs, no hallway catch-ups.

Fridays are how we get that back. Thirty minutes (sometimes more) of weekend plans, stories about our kids, new shows to watch.

And from September through November: Clemson vs. Carolina. We let that one get a little heated. IYKYK.

It's a small thing. But it's the collective exhale at the end of the week and it's how eight people in three states, working in different corners of this agency, stay one team.

The first thing we deliver to a client isn't a website.

It's a style guide. Colors, type, spacing, button states, the little things nobody thinks about until they're missing.

Most of the time it doesn't quite land with the client.

Clients are ready to see their new site. What they get instead is a document that looks like a museum of buttons.

But here's why we do it: a style guide is the DNA of a website. Every page you'll ever build, every landing page you'll ever spin up, every campaign graphic your marketing team touches, all of it traces back to the decisions we make in that document.

Get the DNA right and the site can grow for years without falling apart.

The finished website is where the style guide comes to life. Same voice, same rhythm, same feel from the homepage to the last footer link.

Let us let you in on something. 👀

Almost 60% of web traffic now comes from mobile. The sites that win aren't the ones that just look fine on a phone. They're built with the phone in mind from the start.
Because it's not enough to know who your audience is.

You have to know how they're engaging with your site, and build for it.

Here at DuBose Web, that's exactly how we approach every project. We design for the way people actually browse today, then manage your site alongside you as devices and habits keep changing.

So you're never just optimized once.

You're built to keep earning your place.

However people find you, we'll make sure your site is ready for them.

Six years ago, we designed and built a website for an organization doing meaningful work in their community.
When the project wrapped, they decided to maintain the site internally, without an ongoing partnership or plan. Over time, leadership changed and new people made updates. Every change was well-intentioned, but without a shared strategy to guide it, the site slowly drifted.
The experience became more disconnected. The interface got distracting. Content lost its structure. Accessibility slipped out of compliance.
None of that was intentional. It's exactly what can happen when a website is treated as a one-time project instead of a living asset.
Here's the good news: the current leadership recognized it and came to us ready to reset.
We're now moving into a full redesign and rebuild that brings everything back into alignment. A clean, accessible experience with a clear hierarchy, and a design that supports the message instead of competing with it.
If your site has quietly drifted over the years, you're not behind, and you're not stuck. It just means it's time to treat it like the living asset it is. Let's talk. https://www.duboseweb.com/contact

The South Carolina Statewide Independent Living Council has a new home online!
SC SILC advocates for people with disabilities, works to eliminate barriers, and supports South Carolina's three Independent Living Centers.

Important work deserves a website that works just as hard. One that makes it easy for people to find resources, connect with services, and take action.

That's what this redesign set out to do.

Our team partnered with SC SILC to modernize the site's design, refresh their logo, and improve the experience for every visitor. Accessibility wasn't an afterthought here, it was the foundation.

The site supports AA accessibility standards and includes Google Translate, because a site built around independent living should be usable by everyone.

A few things we're glad made it in:
An Action Hub that helps South Carolinians engage in legislative advocacy
A blog for updates, resources, and advocacy positions
A responsive contact form that makes reaching out simple

We're grateful for the chance to help an organization doing meaningful work across South Carolina strengthen its digital home.
