More on the Zenith R-520 Trans-Oceanic. The dial string has been restrung, and the selenium rectifier has been replaced with a modern diode and dropping resistor. Replacing a selenium rectifier is very important. When they fail (and they will) they release hydrogen selenide gas. This also smells like sulfer. Now that it is playing we will align the set to ensure a factory performance.

Finished up the recap on the Zenith R--520. Next up it to restring the dial cord and replace the selenium rectifier.

Do to the tight space under the chassis and a customer request we removed and restuffed the original can type electrolytic capacitor. Next is to reinstall it on the chassis and finish up the recap.

First look after the chassis was pulled. On the Zenith R-520. It is missing a tube shield and the 3V4 has gone to air. One coil for the 25 meter band is loose from its mount. All the other tubes tested strong. We will start the recap today and replace the selenium rectifier. There will be more updates as we go.

We just finished this Clarion 11801 tube radio manufactured in 1947. This radio has been electrically restored. This included replacing all the electrolytic and paper foil capacitors. All the resistors were tested and any out of value were replaced. All the tubes were tested and any weak tubes were replaced. The power cord was replaced but the original plug was retained. The volume control was cleaned, After all of this the set was aligned. The cabinet is in nice shape and has no cracks or chips. The cabinet has been repainted. It will be double boxed to ensure a safe arrival.

Next up for electrical restoration is this 1947 Clarion 11801. We brought it up slowly on a variac to get a "before" idea if how it is performing, and it wasn't very good. Lots a hum and the one station it pulled in was extremely distorted.
