The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to maintain a dual-variant strategy based on SIM configuration: a fully digital eSIM-only model and a version that retains the traditional nano-SIM slot. This approach reflects Apple’s gradual transition toward a portless, more space-efficient internal design while still accommodating regions where physical SIM usage remains prevalent.
From a hardware standpoint, the eSIM-only variant is positioned to take advantage of reclaimed internal space, potentially enabling a modest increase in battery capacity—estimated in the 5,100–5,200 mAh range. In contrast, the nano-SIM version prioritizes flexibility.
On the performance side, both configurations are expected to be powered by Apple’s 2nm A20 Pro chip, delivering improved power efficiency across the board. However, the slightly larger battery in the eSIM-only model could translate to marginal gains in overall endurance.
eSIM only:
In select countries and regions, certain iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models are eSIM-only. These include units purchased in the United States, United States Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Guam, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman.
eSIM and nano-SIM:
In select countries and regions, certain iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models support both eSIM and a nano-SIM card. This configuration is available across Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Latin America, and most other global markets.
Ultimately, Apple’s continued push toward eSIM—particularly in select regions—appears to be driven by a combination of engineering efficiency, internal space optimization, and long-term reliability improvements.
