These monster truffles are no-bake, make 36 of them, and they might be the cutest thing you put on your Halloween dessert table this year. Crushed Oreos and cream cheese dipped in colored candy melts with little monster eyes on top. My kids lose their minds over these every time. Recipe in comments!

🍂 Long before anyone had heard of "comfort food," generations of Hoosier families lined up at the L.S. Ayres Tea Room on the fourth floor of the downtown Indianapolis department store for a slice of their famous Date Pudding. It wasn't fancy. It was just a warm, sticky sweet square of baked dates and walnuts under a cloud of whipped cream, and it became one of the most beloved desserts in Indiana history.

When the Tea Room finally closed its doors in 1990, Hoosiers didn't let the recipe disappear. It got passed down, photocopied, and tucked into recipe boxes across the state, and it still shows up at Indiana potlucks, church dinners, and Sunday tables today. 🥧

Servings: 9 squares | Total Time: 1 hour

INGREDIENTS
1 cup chopped pitted dates
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Sweetened whipped cream, for serving

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease an 8x8 inch baking pan.
2. Place the chopped dates in a bowl. Pour the boiling water over them, stir in the baking soda, and let the mixture cool for about 10 minutes.
3. In a separate bowl, beat the sugar and egg together until light and well combined.
4. Stir in the flour and salt until just combined, then fold in the cooled date mixture and vanilla extract.
5. Fold in the chopped walnuts, then pour the batter into the prepared pan.
6. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool slightly, cut into squares, and serve warm topped with whipped cream.

Did your family have a version of this one in the recipe box, or is this your first time hearing about the Tea Room? 🍽️
