Business Branding (like livestock branding) is one of man's
most interesting tools. Every design, by necessity, is different than all others, often conveying the character of its owner or family. There is little difference between both types of business, except for the critters and the red hot poker!
Now, A short history of logos & branding: For many thousands of years groups of all types have used symbols, patterns and colors to identify themselves and their belongings. Some of the earliest dates are from 2700 BC.
Paintings in Egyptian tombs document branding oxen with hieroglyphics.
The Ancient Greeks and Romans marked their livestock, their slaves and possessions with a hot iron. Ouch!
In Western Europe, during the Middle Ages and on up to present time, the "Coat of Arms" served as a way to identify Royal Families.
The Aristocracy in Japan identified their families with a "mon," a circular design incorporating flowers or animals.
In China for centuries, artists have been using a "chop" to symbolize their name on their drawings, paintings and sculpture.
In Scotland, a particular "plaid" in the family's clothing identified each and every Scottish clan (and made lots of work for the weavers.)
Cortez from Spain introduced branding to the New World in 1541. He brought cattle stamped with his mark of three crosses.
These symbols all brought an air of respect to the families and meant to the illiterate “watch out,” “keep your hands off,” “this belongs to us” and much more. Emblazoned on carriages, castles, stationery, flags, rings and sealing wax, these symbols soon became the first public identity devices.
A Visible Brand - There has never been anything to take the place of a visible brand as a permanent definitive mark of ownership and a deterrent to theft. The Livestock people say "a brand's something that won't wash off." Business people agree but add "a brand's something that won't wash off your mind!"
A great logo, tagline, and branding program will set you apart from the pack and help you rise above the noise. Is it worth the investment? In a word, YES!
