Coffee shops, airports, and hotels make it easy to work from anywhere, but public networks are often unsecured, which can leave your work data exposed to anyone who knows where to look.

New to VPNs? A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates an encrypted “tunnel” for your internet connection, so your data stays private and protected, even on public Wi-Fi.

Before you connect, keep these in mind:

Use a VPN to encrypt your connection.
Switch to a secure hotspot (like your phone’s) when possible.
Avoid accessing sensitive files or accounts on open networks.

Scammers are getting smarter, but there are still warning signs. Here are 4 ways to spot a phishing attempt:

1️⃣ Check the sender's address. Look past the display name. Misspelled domains or random strings of letters are a red flag.

2️⃣ Watch for urgency or threats. Messages like "Act now or your account will be closed!" are designed to make you panic and skip thinking.

3️⃣ Hover before you click. Hover over links (or press and hold on mobile) to preview the real destination. If it doesn't match what the message claims, don't click.

4️⃣ Be wary of unexpected requests. Legitimate companies won't ask for passwords, payment info, or gift cards over email or text. When in doubt, contact the company directly using their official website or phone number.

The competition is heating up in the Butte Humane Society Battle of the Businesses, where local businesses rally their communities to collect supplies and donations for Butte Humane Society

Matson & Isom is pushing to collect as many high-need items as possible, especially dog food. Drop off your donation by the end of Friday, Oct 9th. Every dollar and supply item counts! Here are three easy ways to help:

Stolen, reused, or guessed passwords are behind most account breaches. MFA adds a second lock to your door, so even if someone gets your password, they still can't get in.

How MFA works: you prove who you are with two or more things:
🔑 Something you know (password or PIN)
📱 Something you have (phone, security key, authenticator app)
👆 Something you are (fingerprint or face scan)

Get started in 4 steps:

1. Start with your most important accounts: email, banking, work logins, and cloud storage
2. Turn on MFA in the account's Security or Privacy settings
3. Choose an authenticator app (like Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator) over text message codes when you can. It's more secure
4. Save your backup codes somewhere safe in case you lose your phone

⚠️ Watch out for MFA fatigue: if you get a login approval request you didn't initiate, deny it and change your password right away. Never share a verification code with anyone, even if they claim to be from IT or support.

The bottom line: MFA takes about 30 seconds per login and blocks the vast majority of automated account attacks. It's one of the easiest, most effective things you can do to stay safe online.

A strong business deserves a strong safety net. Here are 5 ways to make sure what you've built stays protected:

1. Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule.
Keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy stored offsite or in the cloud. If one fails, you've still got backups.

2. Automate your backups.
Manual backups get forgotten. Schedule them to run automatically so your data is protected without anyone having to remember.

3. Test your restores regularly.
A backup you've never tested is just a hope. Try restoring files every few months to confirm your backups actually work when you need them.

4. Write down your disaster recovery plan.
Document who does what, which systems come back first, and how to reach your IT team. When something goes wrong, a clear plan saves time and stress.

5. Protect your backups from ransomware.
Use immutable or offline backups that attackers can't encrypt or delete, and keep at least one copy disconnected from your main network.
