🪐 A giant cloud "decagon" has been discovered at Saturn's south pole

This is a rare polygonal pattern in the planet's atmosphere, reminiscent of the famous northern hexagon. The northern "hexagon," with a diameter of approximately 32,000 km, was identified using Voyager data published in 1988. Now, astronomers have spotted an even larger structure in the south; it was first discerned in Hubble images from 2023, when the planet's axial tilt brought the southern hemisphere into view.

The southern "decagon" spans roughly 167,820 km and features 10 sides, each about 16,782 km long. It rotates very slowly, taking around 800 days to complete one revolution. According to calculations by the team led by Agustín Sánchez-Lavega (University of the Basque Country), the shape arises from a wave "trapped" within a meandering atmospheric jet stream. Unlike the stable hexagon, the brightness of the decagon's sides varies, suggesting the structure is evolving.

Scientists will monitor whether it disintegrates or, conversely, intensifies as solar illumination reaches its peak at ~60° South latitude in 2032.

Euclid’s Distant Quasars: A Trail to the First Supermassive Black Holes 🔭

Quasars are the active cores of distant galaxies where a supermassive black hole "feeds" and a disk of superheated gas shines brighter than an entire galaxy. Understanding the earliest quasars means understanding how the first black holes grew so rapidly and how they influenced the formation of large spiral galaxies.

In its first six-month survey, the Euclid space telescope discovered 31 new quasars across an area of approximately 3,000 square degrees. Among them are two of the most distant ones ever found. The record-holder, EUCL J172902.75+641018.1, is seen as it appeared when the Universe was about 662 million years old. Its nature was confirmed through spectroscopy conducted at the Keck, Magellan, and Large Binocular observatories.

These objects are identified by their brightness in the infrared range and their "invisibility" in the optical range: the expansion of the Universe shifts their ultraviolet light into the infrared spectrum.

Humans are nearly blind, sensing less than 5% of the physical universe.

Most of physical reality is literally invisible to us. Yes, seriously.

Over 95% of the universe is “missing” and can’t be explained by physics.

Everything we can see: stars, planets, galaxies, and nebulae, makes up just 5% of the universe.

The rest is composed of two elusive forces: dark matter and dark energy. Dark matter, though invisible, acts as the glue that holds galaxies together through gravity we can’t directly detect. Even more mysterious is dark energy, a force that’s accelerating the universe’s expansion, counteracting gravity on cosmic scales.
