LeΕΎΓ‘ky was eight houses and a mill β€” until June 24, 1942. The village had hidden the LibuΕ‘e radio of the Silver A resistance group; after Heydrich's assassination the Gestapo came, the adults were killed, the village razed. Then vs now: unlike Lidice, LeΕΎΓ‘ky was never rebuilt β€” only memorial 'gravehouses' mark where the houses stood. We remember.

On Vozrozhdeniya Island stood Kantubek β€” a closed Soviet town of ~1,500 supporting Aralsk-7, a top-secret biological weapons research and test site. The lab shut in November 1991; the town was abandoned in 1992 and looted. Then vs now: US–Uzbek teams neutralized the anthrax burial pits in 2002; the shrinking Aral Sea has turned the island into a peninsula β€” and the town has been demolished. Population: zero.

Berlin, Nevada boomed on gold from 1896 β€” some 250–300 residents, ~75 buildings, 42,000 ounces of hard-rock gold. By 1911 it was empty. Then vs now: the townsite survives in 'arrested decay' β€” the 30-stamp mill, machine shop, homes all intact β€” inside Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park (est. 1957), beside 225-million-year-old ichthyosaur fossils.

They called it a paradise in summer. 🌊

Stroma sits in the Pentland Firth, between Orkney and the Scottish mainland. In 1901, three hundred and seventy five people called it home β€” two villages, a school, a church, a manned lighthouse.

Then the young people started leaving, and they never came back.

On December 6th, 1962, the Manson family of five boarded the last boat off the island. The lighthouse keepers stayed on until 1997, when the light was automated and they left too.

Now the cottages stand open to the wind, and the only footsteps belong to the sheep. πŸ‘

For centuries Suakin was the Red Sea's great coral-stone port β€” Ottoman from 1555, its merchant houses carved from the sea itself. Then the British built Port Sudan 60 km north (railway 1905, harbour 1909), and by the late 1930s the island was effectively deserted. Then vs now: a ruined island beside a working modern ferry port; the 2017 restoration deal stalled, and the 2023 war paused larger plans.

Capital of the Hittite Empire from ~1650 BC, abandoned around 1200 BC in the Bronze Age collapse, 'rediscovered' in 1834 β€” though nobody knew it was Hittite for decades. Then vs now (LEFT: AI reconstruction of the Lion Gate; RIGHT: Bernard Gagnon, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons): an open-air archaeological park under ongoing excavation, near modern Boğazkale. UNESCO 1986.

πŸ—οΈ Lavasa was meant to be India's first private city β€” a Portofino in the Western Ghats. 25,000 acres, five towns, 300,000 residents.

Then, in 2010, a stop-work order arrived. The builders had skipped the environmental clearance. Everything froze overnight.

The company went bankrupt in 2018. Today about 10,000 people live in the unfinished shell β€” and a thousand homebuyers, who paid a decade ago, are still waiting in empty towers.

A city can die of paperwork before a single street is finished.

Handed to Hi**er in April 1936, the Ordensburg Vogelsang trained N**i leadership cadres β€” then became British, then Belgian barracks until 2005. Then vs now (LEFT: AI reconstruction of the 1936 academy; RIGHT: Sir James, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons): the 50,000 mΒ² complex is now a visitor center and memorial confronting its past, beside Eifel National Park.

In 1929 a farmer digging a ditch near Guanghan struck jade β€” and woke a lost kingdom. The 1986 pits held giant bronze masks with protruding cylindrical eyes and a 2.62-meter standing figure, carbon-dated to 1131–1012 BC: the Bronze Age Shu kingdom, with no written records of its own. Then vs now: abandoned around 1050 BC for reasons still unknown, the site is now one of China's great museums.

Four villages once stood here, diked by Cistercian monks, with a castle levying tolls on Antwerp-bound ships. The All Saints' Flood of 1570 nearly drowned the land; in 1584 the dikes were deliberately breached as a military inundation β€” and the land was never reclaimed. Then vs now: no buildings remain β€” the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe is now Western Europe's largest brackish salt marsh. (The mermaid-curse tale? Folklore.)
