It's been a hard year. Not just for me, either. It's been a tough one for most of my friends in the creative field. The friends I've talked to have had to cut staff by half or more, have taken on debt, or (gasp) part-time positions.

I know there are things out of my control, but when all of this happens and a client/job gets out of control and tells us we've failed, even though I know we haven't, it slides under my skin like staples under my fingernails.

Those words are never "just business." People like to say that, but I can feel the personal attack behind the words.

Our work has a little life that we care for. I care about the things and people I commit to and I am a perpetual solution-seeker for them.

I know I have a reputation for being a tough gal, but let me tell you, I'm not. I have to set boundaries to protect myself, or else I can't function. Maybe that's what people are talking about?

I just want to make beautiful things that make people feel good.

Which I do and have done for more than 20 years.
