There's a common assumption that in 2026, everyone knows how to use a computer. It's wrong, and it's costing employers time and money.

The National Skills Coalition and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta analyzed 43 million job postings and found that 92% of U.S. jobs require digital skills. For entry-level roles requiring zero to two years of experience, that number jumps to 95%. At the same time, roughly one in three American workers lacks foundational digital skills. Not advanced programming. Foundational. As in: navigating a web browser, managing files, using email, and working in basic office applications.

This isn't a niche problem. It shows up in every industry that hires at volume. Healthcare support staff who can't navigate an EHR system. Warehouse workers who struggle with inventory management software. Retail employees who freeze when the POS system throws an error. Administrative assistants who can't build a basic spreadsheet. These are real, recurring hiring failures that a 15-minute assessment could have prevented.

The hiring process is supposed to connect employers with the right people, but increasingly and infuriatingly, it's doing the opposite.

Job seekers feel like their applications vanish into a void or get a rejection email that comes fast enough to give them whiplash. Recruiters feel like they're drowning in applications that all look the same.

And sitting between them is a layer of automation that was built for efficiency but is systematically excluding the candidates both sides need.

We’re hosting a webinar in partnership with HR Dive! Listen as Dr. Brian K. Miller, Professor in the Department of Management at Texas State University, and Thomas Marks, eSkill’s VP of Marketing, talk about where AI should and shouldn't be in the hiring process.

Agentic AI is expected to autonomously resolve 80% of common customer service issues — like password resets, order-status questions, straightforward troubleshooting, basic routing — without human intervention by 2029. This also represents significant financial savings for customer service teams, with Gartner projecting a 30% reduction in operational costs.

This also means that the calls that reach a human are disproportionately the ones that are ambiguous or high-stakes. And since agents won’t be handling rote exchanges anymore, they’ll spend more time on other tasks, like wrangling the AI bots who ARE handling those exchanges.

Accordingly, Gartner also says more than 80% of customer service organizations plan to expand human agent responsibilities, with 84% adding new skills to agent profiles. That means longer training — and hiring for the type of agent who can handle more complex situations and varied responsibilities, not just the one who’s comfortable doing repetitive work and following a script.

In short, the contact center agent role is metamorphosizing, and contact center leaders need to plan for it now.

According to some sources, AI is not actually taking all the jobs, although it’s a convenient excuse when it comes to layoffs. That is, except when it comes to customer service.

In customer service overall, Forrester research estimates that half of roles will be lost to AI by 2030. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also attributes a decline in the number of customer service roles — including contact center positions — to automation and technology advancements.

Conversational LLM agents have made it possible for both BPOs and in-house contact centers to relegate the easier calls to AI. For corporations, that means millions of dollars saved in workforce costs. For the real human agents left over, it means having to take harder calls and handle more complex work. And what does that mean for training times and the cost of attrition in turn? It’s a chain of cause-and-effect many contact centers must plan for now.

We’ll begin with the first link in the chain — the fact that the number of customer service agents that contact centers employ is objectively, truly lowering.

Between tap-to-pay, mobile wallets, self-checkout, online banking, and QR-code menus, it's easy to assume that counting bills and making change are becoming relics of another era. But Federal Reserve data tells a more complicated story.

In 2024, cash still accounted for 14% of all U.S. consumer payments, making it the third-most-used payment method behind credit and debit cards. Consumers averaged seven cash payments per month — a figure that has remained steady since 2020. More than 90% of consumers also said they expect to keep using cash either for payments or as a store of value.

And somebody still has to handle all that money correctly.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5% growth and roughly 115,300 openings per year for accountants and auditors through 2035. On the bookkeeping side, the BLS projects about 144,100 annual openings for bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks, though overall employment in those roles is expected to decline 6% as automation absorbs more routine tasks.

The supply side is where things get painful. Accounting graduates dropped roughly 47,000 in 2023, down 10% from 2021. With 75% of CPAs having reached retirement eligibility by 2020, the replacements aren't coming fast enough.

There is a current small bright spot in enrollment, with AICPA data showing accounting enrollment at four-year colleges rose 8.9% in spring 2026, but that's growth off a historically low base that will take years to materially affect the pipeline.

Unsurprisingly, 61% of finance and accounting leaders say finding skilled talent is harder than it was a year ago, even as 74% plan to increase permanent headcount in the second half of 2026. The demand is there. The candidates aren't.

Contact center work has changed a lot on the surface, but the same issues have plagued the industry for decades. High attrition, thin margins, competitive pressures — these problems have all remained and, if anything, have gotten more difficult to solve.

In a recent advisory session with eSkill, a veteran contact center leader with more than two decades in BPO and captive environments shared a candid, behind-the-scenes view of how the call center industry has shifted. Her story traces how contact center work has changed — or rather, how it’s stayed the same.

She says, “I wish I could tell you [contact centers] have evolved, but they haven't.”
