Glossary: Oxide pellets

Oxide pellets are spherical iron ore pellets used as feedstock in direct reduction plants and blast furnaces.

Pelletizing is a value-adding process that enables the use of iron ore fines produced during mining and beneficiation. These fines are agglomerated into pellets by mixing them with binders and additives, then firing them.

The resulting oxide pellets, composed primarily of iron oxides, offer the consistent size and quality needed to support stable furnace operation and efficient reduction to metallic iron.

Reliability doesn’t start at startup. It starts in design.

In the latest Direct From Midrex article, Chris Hayes, Vice President of Operations, explains how reliability in direct reduction plants is engineered from the earliest stages of a project.

Design decisions around flexibility, maintainability, equipment layout and operational experience can directly shape long-term plant performance.

That approach is reflected in operating results. In 2025, at least eight MIDREX Modules established new annual production records, while 10 modules operated for more than 8,000 hours during the year.

As the industry moves toward lower-carbon ironmaking pathways, designing for reliability is more critical than ever.

Glad Midrex could take part in this conversation about the future of American steel.

A new report from Ceres, Inc. highlights the growing opportunity for direct reduced iron (DRI) as the U.S. steel industry enters a major reinvestment cycle.

The analysis finds DRI can offer:
• The lowest-cost new-build option in the four U.S. regions analysed
• Greater operational flexibility
• About 40% lower greenhouse gas emissions than the blast-furnace route
• Flexibility to switch or blend between natural gas and hydrogen

For an industry facing major decisions about its next generation of ironmaking, DRI has a significant role to play.

We’re looking forward to attending COM 2026, the 65th Conference of Metallurgy and Materials, and connecting with industry leaders advancing the future of ironmaking and steelmaking.

Don’t miss Paul Kazalski's presentation: "Use of Hydrogen in the MIDREX® Process."

The presentation will explore hydrogen’s role in the transition to lower-carbon ironmaking, highlighting how the MIDREX Process provides a practical pathway from natural gas-based DRI to increased hydrogen utilization and, ultimately, 100% hydrogen operation.

If you’re attending COM 2026, we’d be glad to connect. See you in Calgary.

Giving back to our community is at the heart of who we are.

Last month, the Midrex team came together for our Midrex Gives Back charity event, packing backpacks with essential school supplies to help local students start the new school year ready to learn.

A big thank you to Marjorie Peter for organizing this fantastic initiative, and to Classroom Central for the incredible work they do supporting teachers and students in our community.

Since 2002, Classroom Central has provided free school supplies to 127,000 students and their teachers across six school districts, ensuring classrooms have the resources they need to thrive.

Together, we're helping make a positive difference, one backpack at a time 🎒📚 .

In direct reduction, reliability is a performance advantage.

A reliable DRI plant does more than start strong. They’re engineered to adapt.

They help operators maintain consistent production, stable product quality, efficient energy use, and predictable maintenance schedules, while reducing unplanned interruptions that can impact downstream steelmaking operations and profitability.

For iron and steel producers, proven technology and operational experience help reduce risk, not only during startup but throughout the life of the plant.

As the steel industry continues its transition toward lower-carbon ironmaking, designing plants that can evolve alongside changing technologies is becoming just as important as achieving day-one performance.

Plant Spotlight: DRIC

Congratulations to DRIC in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on an outstanding year of operational excellence.

In 2025, both DRIC modules operated above rated capacity, achieving a new combined annual production record. Module 2 set new records in annual production, productivity, and electricity consumption efficiency, while also reaching a new monthly production record in January 2025.

Module 2 also achieved the second-highest operational time among all MIDREX Plants in 2025, while Module 1 established a new electricity consumption record.

These milestones highlight the dedication, innovation and performance of the entire DRIC team. Congratulations on an exceptional achievement.

Several members of Midrex's leadership team, KC Woody, Trisha Trautman, Nigel Phillips and Gerry Gill, recently visited the Stegra plant in northern Sweden to see the pioneering Green Steel Project firsthand.

The visit provided an opportunity to see the impressive progress made by the Construction Field Services team and experience the scale of this landmark development.

Stegra's flagship facility in Boden will integrate green hydrogen, green iron and green steel production in a single plant, helping shape the future of low-carbon steelmaking.

The progress at Stegra is a powerful example of what can be achieved through innovation, collaboration and a shared commitment to a more sustainable steel industry.
