A major investment in the future of American steelmaking.

Mesabi Metallics has selected Midrex for the direct reduction component of its planned electric arc furnace-based integrated steelmaking complex in Iowa, USA.

The project will utilize MIDREX Flex technology to produce hot direct reduced iron (HDRI) for direct feed to adjacent electric arc furnaces, as well as hot briquetted iron (HBI).

The project represents:

✔ Up to 10 million tons of annual steel production at full buildout
✔ One of the world's largest DRI complexes
✔ Flexible HDRI and HBI production
✔ Continued growth of DRI-based steelmaking

Building on a relationship spanning more than 30 years between Midrex and the Essar Group, this selection marks another significant milestone in their long-standing partnership.

How can bustle gas temperature be controlled without sending gas back through the reformer?

The answer is Direct Recycle.

The Direct Recycle System cools a controlled stream of cooled process gas and sends it directly to the bustle gas, bypassing the reformer. This helps operators fine-tune bustle gas temperature when furnace temperature rises above the desired level.

Because the recycled gas has not passed through the reformer, it can lower bustle gas quality, so the system is used carefully to maintain the required process conditions.

Importantly, Direct Recycle includes its own cooler, allowing it to provide the required cooling without a separate Reformed Gas Cooler in a MIDREX Flex Plant.

A new benchmark for MIDREX Direct Reduced Iron production.

Congratulations to ArcelorMittal Lázaro Cárdenas on achieving a remarkable ironmaking milestone.

The AMLC 6.5-meter MIDREX Reduction Furnace has now produced 41.6 million metric tons of CDRI, the highest cumulative production achieved by a single MIDREX Module through 2025.

This achievement reflects decades of operational excellence, strong teamwork, and sustained performance above rated capacity, supported by predominantly oxide pellets from the site's adjacent pellet plant.

A historic milestone for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production and a testament to the long-term performance and reliability of MIDREX technology.

Congratulations to the entire ArcelorMittal Lázaro Cárdenas team, and thank you for your continued partnership with Midrex.

Glossary: Oxide pellets

Oxide pellets are spherical iron ore pellets used as feedstock in direct reduction plants and blast furnaces.

Pelletizing is a value-adding process that enables the use of iron ore fines produced during mining and beneficiation. These fines are agglomerated into pellets by mixing them with binders and additives, then firing them.

The resulting oxide pellets, composed primarily of iron oxides, offer the consistent size and quality needed to support stable furnace operation and efficient reduction to metallic iron.
