**Marketing Tips For Independent Authors**
As an independent author, many of the decisions that would be handled by your publisher will now fall to you. While this allows you to make important choices for how your work is presented to your readers, it also means that you are responsible for marketing. When marketing your book, you’ll need to develop a strategy that helps you reach your target audience. The following tips can act as a guide, so you can better understand how to approach marketing as an independent author.
• Know your readers – You can get a general idea of your target readers based on your genre. Understanding their reading habits even more can help you formulate an appealing marketing strategy. Knowing things like your readers’ age range, preferred reading platform (paper, audio, digital), and social media habits can all contribute to how you market your work.
• Work on your online image – Create or update your author website and your social media accounts. It’s a good idea to be present on all popular social media platforms, but focus your activity on the platforms that you target readers are most likely to use.
• Listing your book – Your book listing can make or break your launch. Most importantly, decide which categories your book fits in and use multiple if applicable. When writing your book description, lead with a catchy intro, hook your readers with something that makes your book stand out, and include information about popular tropes.
• Get ready to launch – Be as active as possible in the weeks leading up to your book release. Create a buzz through social media and consider getting some advanced copies in the hands of readers to encourage early feedback.
