Zombie Router! This isn't going to be a long-winded post on security for your router (Link3)
This post is about using DD-WRT and the handy management app that is available for your phone. I have used DD-WRT for years on every router I have ever owned. Here are a few small reasons. 1. Will always be running the most updated kernel, webserver, and security patches. 2. FEATURES! Lots of things are available in DD-WRT that are not available with your stock Linksys, Netgear, or ASUS. This goes for new and older equipment. 3. POWER! You can crank up the juice and fry small animals and children from your home. I assume this is true since I never hear any crickets or see any scorpions.
With a wide availability of compatible hardware, check out the site and get to installing (Link1). When you are finished you will want to install the monitoring and management app on your phone. (Link2)

Updates have started to roll out for the major players in the Android Arena. So if you have not received an update this week now would be the time to check for it.

*Samsung: The Galaxy S3, S4, and Note 4, in addition to the S6 models
*HTC: The One M7, One M8, and One M9.
*LG: The G2, G3, and G4.
*Sony: The Xperia Z2, Z3, Z4, and Z3 Compact.
*Android One devices supported by Google

This will not be patched on older devices which will be interesting since 40% of devices are running KitKat 4.4.
My Nexus 6 got the update and it was fairly painless. Pics included. The only thing I would recommend is that while the update happens pretty quick, the first reboot with the apps will take a while.
After the update I ran the validation app again and all was good!

Android app suggestion: Screen Filter. This is an app that is absolutely needed if you ever use your phone in low light situations. It lets you view your screen without being blinded. . this isn't just something that makes your palms sweaty when up in-front of a bunch of people. Stagefright will also make your palms sweaty as a hacker takes over your phone from a crafty MMS (An MMS can be a video, pic, or a group message). Some Android devices are vulnerable while others are not. There is a handy App that has been developed to check your phone (Posted below). Don't burn your device in boiling oil if it is vulnerable. I suggest turning off auto retrieve MMS until your device is patched. Also know your sender, opening an attachment from a stranger via email or text is always dangerous.

Everyone knows there is an outage for cell service in the Ohio valley. What you may not be aware of is there there are many alternatives that work great over WiFi when needing to make a call. Such as:
1. T-Mobile. T-mo has had WiFi calling in most of their phone for over a year. Just connect to a hotspot and you can call and text the same way you have been. No problems and no special apps.
2. Google Hangouts/Google voice. Works on Android, iOS, Laptops, and desktops. Lots of features and if you like it you can replace your current SMS app with it. Give it a try.
3. Whats App. Facebook bought it for 14 Billion dollars and having 450 million users is saying something. A negative is in order to set it up you need a working phone because of a verification text.
4. Skype. Dont count this one out. just remember to buy skype credit to make those calls
5. Facebook. Make calls to your other facebook friends!

Not an exhaustive list. Just my Go to when I don't have service.
