New World Screwworm Alert β Information from Our Local Game Warden
The City of Carrizo Springs is sharing important information provided by Dimmit County Game Warden Macee Krpec regarding the potential spread of the New World Screwworm (NWS) in our region.
Cases have been reported in Zavala County and La Salle County, so residents, ranchers, hunters, and pet owners should remain vigilant and monitor animals for signs of infestation.
π What to Watch For:
β’ Open sores or wounds containing live maggots
β’ Animals shaking their heads or showing signs of irritation
β’ Foul odor coming from a wound
β’ Infestations around the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, or other wounds
β οΈ Important: Only LIVE maggots found on a LIVE animal should be collected and reported for testing. Dead animals with maggots or flies will not be collected for testing.
ππ All warm-blooded animals can be affected, including livestock, wildlife, pets, and, in rare cases, humans.
