Even a long, complicated password can be stolen through a convincing phishing email, exposed in a data breach, or captured on a compromised device.

That is where multi-factor authentication comes in. If someone gets your password, MFA gives them another barrier to get through before they can access your account.

📲 That text code feels secure. Unfortunately, cybercriminals have found ways around it.

SMS and voice verification can be compromised through tactics such as SIM-swapping, where a scammer takes control of your phone number and intercepts your login codes.

That’s why Microsoft is moving businesses toward passkeys. Instead of sending a code that can be stolen, passkeys use secure credentials stored on your device or in a protected credential manager. They are also designed to resist phishing.

Starting September 1, 2026, Microsoft will begin prompting eligible SMS and voice users to register a passkey.

📱 Text-message login codes are on their way out.

Beginning February 1, 2027, Microsoft will stop providing SMS and voice calls for Microsoft ID authentication.

Microsoft’s preferred replacement is passkeys, which let employees securely sign in using their face, fingerprint, device PIN, or security key. They are also far harder for cybercriminals to steal through phishing or SIM-swapping.

If anyone on your team still relies on a text or phone call to access Microsoft 365, now is the time to start planning the switch. Waiting until the deadline could mean login problems and a very busy help desk.
