I Discovered SAP Because of a Chemistry Degree—And It Changed Everything

I studied organic chemistry at DePauw University. I did not plan to spend the next 25 years in enterprise software. But chemistry and SAP have more in common than most people realize.

I graduated with a degree in organic chemistry and economics.

My first job out of college was at a bank. Then a technology recruiting firm. And then, almost by accident, I stumbled into the SAP world in 1998.

What I noticed immediately: SAP is structured exactly like chemistry.

Modular. Systematic. Every element has a defined role. Change one thing and it affects everything downstream.

The periodic table taught me to think in systems. SAP rewarded that thinking.

That was 25 years ago.

SAP had roughly 30% of the Fortune 500 market at the time. Today it's closer to 80–90%.

I've watched the entire arc, from R/3 to ECC to HANA to S/4HANA. From on-premise to cloud. From a niche skill set to the most in-demand enterprise technology expertise in the world.

What I know now that I didn't know then:

The technology has changed completely. The people challenges haven't changed at all.

Employers don't automatically prefer younger candidates. They value judgment, follow-through, and track records.

The issue isn't age. It's whether you can make a credible case for why your experience matters in the direction you want to go.

Think adjacent, not random.

The best career changes aren't complete reinventions. They're transitions built around skills you already have.

Spent years in manufacturing operations? ERP consulting is a logical move. You understand the business problems the system solves—you just need to learn the platform.

Reframe your experience. Don't dismiss it.
