PSA: I Was Targeted by a Scam — Don’t Fall for It

Today, I got a call from a man posing as a police officer. He claimed I had three bench warrants and said I needed to pay fines immediately to place them in a “frozen” status.

He used a spoofed number that looked like a real police department. It was convincing. He even cited a judge’s name and case numbers.

Then he told me to pay through Venmo — to an account that looked like a government agency but had zero transaction history and a vague logo.

THIS IS A SCAM.
• Real law enforcement will never demand payment over the phone.
• Warrants and fines are handled through the courts, not peer-to-peer apps.
• If someone pressures you to act fast or pay in gift cards, crypto, or apps — it’s fake.

Stay alert. Ask questions. Hang up and call the official number yourself.

Business owners, beware! If you get an email from Registered.Agency claiming you need to file a BOI report for compliance—DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS! 🚫

⚠️ Red Flags:
❌ They are NOT a government agency.
❌ They impersonate FinCEN (which only operates at fincen.gov).
❌ They may try to steal your SSN, Driver’s License, or business info.

✅ How to Stay Safe:
✔️ Only file BOI reports at www.fincen.gov/boi (it’s FREE!).
✔️ If you clicked their link, freeze your credit & monitor your accounts.
✔️ Report the scam to the FTC & FinCEN.

Tip: Prevent Social Engineering Attacks

Hackers don’t just break in—they trick their way in. Social engineering attacks, like phishing and impersonation scams, target your employees’ trust to steal sensitive data or access your systems.

🕵️ Verify Before You Trust: Train employees to never click links, open attachments, or share credentials without verifying the sender—even if the request looks legitimate.

📞 Use a Callback Protocol: If a “vendor,” “bank,” or even your “boss” requests sensitive info via email or chat, call them directly using a known number—not the one in the email.

🛑 Limit Public Information: Hackers scan your website and social media for employee names, roles, and emails. Avoid listing direct emails or personal details that make impersonation easier.

🔄 Rotate Security Questions: If your password recovery questions are based on publicly available info (e.g., your pet’s name from Instagram), change them to unpredictable answers.

🚨 Test Your Team: Run internal phishing drills to see who falls for fake scams. Reward employees who spot and report suspicious emails!
