Welcome to Right to Geek! We are a new electronics repair shop in the central KY area servicing anything from PCs and laptops to phones and tablets to game consoles and TVs. We’re built on the principles of the Right to Repair movement, advocating for manufacturers to make parts and schematics more accessible to consumers and third party repair technicians. NOW TAKING APPOINTMENTS*
*appointments are limited for the time being, but if you’d like to know our availability then shoot us a message!
Right now our team only consists of one person, myself, so I’ll leave a little about myself and my experiences in the industry below, as well as what led to my decision to start an independent shop.
——-
Hey, my name is Ren. I’m only 21 years old but despite that fact I have spent nearly a decade and a half somehow involved in tech repair or the electronics industry as a whole. Around the time I was 7, my dad started letting me help him with basic things like antivirus scans, software and OS installations, and PC hardware replacements. By the time I was 12, I had hand-built dozens of PCs, ranging from custom gaming desktops to basic computer lab workstations. By the time I was 15, I had built a homemade miniature plasma cutter and developed my own root kit for the Samsung Galaxy S7+.
Since hitting age 16, I’ve worked in multiple IT support positions at Taylor County High School (intern) and Hanover College, and currently still work half time doing certified first party repairs for uBreakiFix. Throughout my tenure in the tech world, I’ve achieved first party repair certifications from Apple, Samsung and Google, as well as a general technician certification from Asurion.
Unfortunately, however, these certifications apply to me as an individual only when working for an authorized first party repair shop, which requires years worth of applications, inspections and fees as well as various other requirements. This is why most repair shops, mine included, are unable to gain access to OEM parts and schematics directly from manufacturers. This is also why the right to repair movement is so important. In my time with uBreakiFix, I’ve come across a great many devices which have been obviously previously butchered by a poorly trained tech with more interest in selling a new device than repairing the one you already have. This mindset as well as various other factors has led myself and multiple of my colleagues to decide to move to independent repair(individually). As an independent shop, when you bring in a device for repair, that’s what you’re going to get. We will not try to sell you a new product, or rush through your repair in hopes it will simply die again and you’ll decide it’s not worth repairing anymore. Because we have less overhead than larger first party shops, we are also able to offer lower priced repairs with a slightly lower profit margin. Right to Geek is committed to provided the highest possible repair quality at the lowest possible cost to you.
