We eliminate your IT pain – and we have a new FLAT-RATE plan! (see below)

If you are using Windows 7 Home – BE ON THE LOOKOUT!!!!

Lately we have been encountering customers who have Windows 7 Home installed on their computer, only to find that the next day it had been mysteriously updated to Windows 10 Home.

The BIG issue is that YOUR DATA WILL ALSO GET DELETED as part of the update!!

Your data can be saved – but ONLY if you catch this within 30 days!

If you wait until after 30 days your data will be gone!!

If you have a computer with Windows 7 Home that you do not check very often and it is on, you may want to check to see if it has any updates pending. These may be the Windows 7 to Windows 10 automatic updates.

If you do have these updates pending, back up your disk drive!!! Protect yourself before the updates automatically apply and delete your data.

We have heard that this can also happen with Windows 8.

Connect your cell phone to your PC and access it like you access your PC (even with a mouse)

If you have one of the most recent Samsung cell phones, you can now connect it to your PC running Windows 10!

Pick up a special docking station called DeX and connect it to your PC.

It allows you to connect your monitor, keyboard, and mouse to your computer. It will start up a special app that lets you run your Android apps in Windows, access the Internet, speed up your texting, and work with your desktop versions of websites as opposed to the tiny version.

This turns your Samsung phone into a full-size PC.

Check out this link:
Turn your Samsung Galaxy into a PC

Some excellent ways to check if your hard drive is ready to fail or in good shape:

Most of us assume that hard drives will last forever, only to find that one day they fail and you lose all of your data.

If you back up your disk driver regularly, you are ahead of the game. Sadly, most people do not.

AND…..even if you back up your hard drive every night and then your disk drive crashes the next day, you will have lost the work that you have done that day.

There are more complicated backup schedules that can help you with this but then again you can just check the health of your hard drive once in a while.

The easiest way to do this is by doing the following:

The simplest way to check your disk health is to open File Explorer, right-click on a drive, and click on Properties.
Then click on the Tools tab, and click on “Check” under the “Error checking” at the top.

Doing this performs a read only operation on your hard drive and does not do any updates to it, so it is safe.
If you have the security rights and the know-how, then open up a Command prompt with administrator privileges.
You can then run CHKDSK/F which may fix the problems – BUT DO NOT DO THIS WITHOUT BACKING UP YOUR HARD DRIVE FIRST!!!!

MICROSOFT AND MONTHLY CHARGES
Well, folks – it looks like Microsoft is planning to charge users a monthly fee if they want to stay on Windows 7 and still get updates and security protection.

Supposedly this does not start until January 14th, 2020, but it would be a good idea to put this into your planning and/or budgeting.

You can upgrade to Windows 10 to avoid this but the upgrade to Windows 10 is no longer free. 

And rumors are that Microsoft MAY change their licensing model from a one-time fee to a monthly fee. This is just a rumor but keep it in the back of your mind for planning purposes.

Please click on the link below and feel free to call me or email me with any questions.

RUSSIA AND CHINA
No surprise here. The Pentagon has named Russia and China as the biggest Cyber Security threats (click on the link below).

However, our recent logs show that India, Eastern Europe, and North Korea also rank up in the top.

In fact, some of our customers have requested that we block all non-USA access to their various sites and networks. Our statistics have shown that by doing this millions of attack attempts have been thwarted.

Without hard statistics it is hard to determine how many foreign attacks are occurring each day.

In light of the volume of these attacks, many of you should consider whether blocking foreign access to your networks and sites may be worth considering.

If so, please send me an email or give me a call.

GOOGLE, YOUR SMART PHONE AND YOUR PRIVACY
It appears that after all of these years, Google still has the ability to control your smart phone without your knowledge.

At one time, this was probably a good thing since none of us knew much about our phones and we needed help.

BUT.….times have changed and we want our control back. Click below and see how vulnerable you and your smart phone are.

IF YOU ARE NEW TO WINDOWS 10 AND YOU TRY TO INSTALL CHROME AND/OR FIREFOX, YOU MAY GET A “FRIENDLY” MESSAGE FROM MICROSOFT – BUT DO NOT BE ALARMED

Apparently the folks at Microsoft do not take too kindly to users installing Chrome and/or Firefox on their Windows 10 machine and sometimes present you with an “alarm”.

Disregard this alarm – this is now past history (hopefully).

TECH ADVICE/TRIVIA

DEFRAG YOUR SSD?
Have you upgraded your C drive to an SSD yet?
If not, you probably should. They have come down in price and it will speed up your PC tremendously – more than adding memory and sometimes more than adding a new processor.

The only difference is that you do not have to defrag your SSD like you do a regular hard drive.

You may want to use a smart defragger like Auslogics. You can get it for free from www.ninite.com

EVER WONDER WHY YOUR DISK SPACE SIZE CALCULATIONS ARE NOT CORRECT?
Most likely this is because you think that 1KB is 1,000 bytes.

Actually, 1KB is 1,024 bytes.

This in itself is not too different from 1,000. However if you are calculating 1MB (1Mega Bytes), you could be off by a bunch.

1MB is actually 1024x1024 bytes. Which is actually equal to - 1,048,576 bytes NOT 1,000,000 bytes.

This is a significant difference.

The same applies to 1GB. 1GB is equal to 1024x1024x1024 bytes or 1,073741,824 bytes, not 1,000,000,000 bytes.

As you can see, as you go up in scale, assuming 1KB is 1,000 bytes can lead to a sizeable error.

A message that I received from Bof A - Please forward/share --

Reboot your router and update your password to help prevent a recent malware system from impacting your business.

Bank of America Merchant Services wants to make sure that you are aware of the latest cybersecurity threats to help you protect your business. Recently, the FBI issued a Public Service Announcement that an estimated 500,000 small office and home routers in at least 54 countries have been infected by malware, called VPNFilter.

VPNFilter is capable of blocking web traffic, collecting information that passes through home and office routers and disabling the devices entirely. The malware targets routers produced by several manufacturers.

To help defend your business against VPNFilter, the FBI recommends that you reboot your router to temporarily disrupt the malware if it is present. You should also upgrade your device's firmware and select a new secure password. If any remote-management settings are in place, they should be disabled.

It's a privilege to serve you. On behalf of us all at Bank of America Merchant Services, thank you for your business.

For more information on this issue, please see below

The FBI recommends any owner of small office and home office routers power cycle (reboot) the devices. Foreign cyber actors have compromised hundreds of thousands of home and office routers and other networked devices worldwide. The actors used VPNFilter malware to target small office and home offic...
