Can we use SSL VPN for Site-To-Site connectivity?

No, SSL VPN is not typically used for site-to-site connectivity. Instead, SSL VPNs are mainly used for remote access VPNs, where individual users securely connect to a private network over the internet using a web browser or lightweight client.

For site-to-site VPN connectivity, which connects two or more entire networks (such as a branch office network to a headquarters network), organizations commonly use IPsec VPNs (Internet Protocol Security VPNs). IPsec is designed to provide a secure tunnel between two networks, ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of data transferred between them.

If you want to integrate Fortinet Single Sign-On (FSSO) in your Windows Active Directory environment without disabling the Windows Firewall, you need to allow traffic on TCP port 8000 from the Collector Agent to the FortiGate.

During the FSSO setup process, it is generally more efficient to add the rule shown in the image rather than disabling the Windows Firewall altogether. This approach ensures a smoother installation while minimizing disruptions. Additionally, if you have a Network Operations Center (NOC) or Security Operations Center (SOC) in place, this configuration helps prevent unnecessary alerts.

Optimizing Traffic-Shaping Policies in FortiGate: Application Control and SSL Inspection

To effectively implement traffic-shaping policies based on applications in FortiGate, it's crucial to use the application control filter in the firewall policy. This is because FortiGate's infrastructure architecture relies on the Unified Threat Management (UTM) mechanism for application-based operations.

For instance, if you're configuring traffic shaping for YouTube, running application control in at least monitor mode within the firewall policy is essential to ensure that the shaping settings are functional.

Additionally, when utilizing security profiles, it's highly recommended to enable full SSL inspection (deep packet inspection) or, at a minimum, certificate inspection. This approach ensures comprehensive visibility and control over the traffic, enhancing the effectiveness of your traffic-shaping policies.

By following these guidelines, you can optimize your network's performance while maintaining security.
