Auroras are expected to be particularly strong in Missouri tonight, beginning around sunset. This event is anticipated to produce significant ground currents, which may impact the power grid. While no outages are forecasted, the risk of technical disruptions will be elevated.

A strong multi-stage coronal mass ejection has just hit earth and several more are inbound. While this is not something to outright worry about, it's predicted to be pretty strong. The KP index is already 7.67 which means if it were night time, northern lights (arouras) might be visible in Missouri with a good camera. As it's getting stronger, I would not be surprised if arouras extended as far south as Mexico but it depends on many factors. Astrophotography enthusiasts, get your batteries on charge and empty your SD cards now!

Please make sure you make backups of your pc and store those backups in a place disconnected from any power sources.

Again, nothing to outright worry about but just make a backup as pc's are more likely to fail during these events if their already getting weak.

NOAA FORECASTS QUICKER, STRONGER SOLAR MAX: When Solar Cycle 25 began in 2020, leading forecasters thought it would be weak and slow to develop. Fast forward three years: NOAA is now predicting a quicker, stronger solar cycle. The revised forecast, published yesterday, shows Solar Max coming sometime between January and October 2024:

NOAA's original prediction for Solar Cycle 25 is shown in pink (), the broad band indicating the uncertainty of the forecast. It has become clear in recent years that the original prediction was too low, which prompted NOAA to issue a new one. The magenta line () traces the new forecast, and takes into account recent high sunspot counts.

Uncertainties in the new forecast are bounded by different shades of magenta. There is roughly a 25% chance that the smoothed sunspot number will fall within the dark-shaded region; a 50% chance it will fall in the medium-shaded region; and a 75% chance it will fall in the lightest of the shaded regions.

If this new forecast is correct, Solar Cycle 25 could land in the ballpark of Solar Cycle 23, which peaked in 2000-2001, and produced the famous Halloween Storms of 2003. However, the odds still favor Solar Cycle 25 being a bit weaker than Solar Cycle 23. Either way, next year's Solar Max could be potent.

NOAA plans to update this new forecast every month. Check out their Space Weather Prediction Testbed for the latest prediction.

STARLINK USERS: As we have mentioned before, the solar maximum is causing increased occurances of geomagnetic storms. It has come to our attention that the recent Starlink outages are intentional and part of the satellites' protective equipment activating. The 24 hour KP index reached Kp= 5.67. Other solar radiation aspects are also elevated. We do not believe this to be the cause of the CenturyLink/Brightspeed outages but until we hear more, it's not out of the question.

Our networks have not been effected by this yet, but please have patience with other providers and industries effected.

Power is out in Cabool again after a strong storm. We are operating with auxiliary power and all core networking services should remain operational. There will possible be momentary down time when we switch back to grid power when it becomes available. 24 hour tech support services are still fully operational.

Today, we have noticed an increase in new customer technical support service calls. If your Pc is acting strangely, please do a reboot. This slight increase is due to the following alerts on the SPACE WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER. Thankfully, this event seems to be coming to a close, especially for the central US.

R3 (Strong) Radio Blackout Impacts
HF Radio: Wide area blackout of HF radio communication, loss of radio contact for about an hour on sunlit side of Earth.
Navigation: Low-frequency navigation signals degraded for about an hour.
More about the NOAA Space Weather Scales

(Earlier)X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Emerging sunspot AR3341 has just produced an X1-class solar flare. A pulse of extreme ultraviolet radiation ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout over North America: map. This sunspot is turning toward Earth, so more geoeffective flares may be in the offing.

While such events are so low level that they will not effect human health, they can have strange impacts on technology. As the solar cycle approaches the 11 year maximum, cyclic events like this will be increasing in frequency and power for the next several years. Make sure your data is backed up to prepare for the possibility of hardware errors, or even an unlikely faililure. Having said all of that, these radio blackout events normally only effect HAM radio operators but we wanted to post just in case.

Take care, and as always, Back Up and Plan Ahead!
