If you run a small business and haven't touched AI yet, here's the safest place to start: the part of the business you know best.

Because you'll spot the mistakes. And it does make mistakes, even on the things Marshall has built with it. When you know the subject, you can tell what it gets right and what it gets wrong, and you can push it further instead of accepting the first answer.

Give it real context, treat every response as a draft, and keep refining. You can't do that in a field you don't know yet.

Expertise first, AI second.

For a long time, Marshall used AI mostly as a sounding board: challenge my thinking, tell me what I'm not seeing.

Then something shifted. Once the scope was defined and the outcome was clear, it started getting real work done. One example: paste in a web server's logs and it finds where the problem is. That's work that used to eat hours.

If AI feels like a toy in your business, the tool probably isn't the issue. A vague ask gets a vague answer. A clear job gets a useful one.

Here's a simple test for any small business owner trying AI for the first time.

Pick the tool you already have, whether that's ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. Give it a problem that's truly yours to solve, not somebody else's job. Then check the result against one rule: did it make your day lighter, or did it quietly make your job bigger?

Marshall admits he falls into this too. AI makes it easy to take on things that were never yours to carry, and that's the danger.

The goal isn't to do more. It's to do the right work with less strain.

More options doesn't mean more progress. Most small business owners already feel that, and AI just added a hundred new doors.

So Marshall does what he's done for years: he writes the list down and prioritizes it. Then he asks one question of every idea. Is it clear how this moves the business forward? If not, it goes.

For a business owner with no team and no time, AI works best when it's something you decide to use. It stops helping the moment it's something you feel behind on.

For small business owners who already wear every hat: AI just made it easier to wear more of them.

It can help you build a site, tweak your sales process and set up automations. All in the same week, all by yourself. That feels like a win, until you realize you've made yourself the bottleneck again.

Every business book says the same thing: get out of doing every single thing. AI doesn't change that. It makes the temptation stronger.

Use AI to get resources you never had. Just don't let it talk you out of bringing in people who know their own field.

If you're not sure where AI belongs in your business and where an expert should take over, that's what a Clarity Call is for. πŸ‘‰ Comment CLARITY and we'll reach out to set up a free Clarity Call.

If you're a small business owner thinking about rebuilding your website with AI, read this first.

One of the sites we looked at came out clean and professional. But the old pages Google had already indexed had no redirects, and the tracking and analytics scripts never made the move. The site looked finished while the traffic quietly leaked out.

The question isn't "can AI build me a website?" It can. The question is "who checks what the website was doing before it got rebuilt?"

A site isn't only what people see. It's also everything Google and your reports have learned about it over the years.

The scary question isn't "will AI take my job." It's "if it does, what's left of me in this business."

That's the real fear underneath all the AI talk β€” not the tool itself, but the idea that we stop having a purpose the moment a task gets automated.

Here's the thing: a task isn't a purpose. AI can write the email, build the first draft, run the numbers. It can't sit with a frustrated client and tell them the truth. It can't decide what actually matters for a small business that's never looked like anyone else's. That part was never the job β€” that was always the person.

The businesses that are fine with AI aren't the ones avoiding it. They're the ones who figured out which parts are tasks and which parts are them.

We talk about marketing like it takes discipline. Like you have to force yourself to post, to show up, to stay consistent.

But nobody "disciplines" themselves to brush their teeth. You just do it. It's a habit, not a decision you make every morning.

That's the shift that actually works. The businesses that win at marketing aren't the ones gritting their teeth through it β€” they're the ones who built it into the rhythm of how they run, so it stops requiring willpower at all.

If your marketing still feels like something you have to force, the fix probably isn't more discipline. It's a system.

Every time technology takes over a task, there's a version of this same panic β€” that whatever you're good at is about to stop mattering.

It happened with the textile mills. It's happening again with AI. And both times, the people who actually knew their craft didn't disappear β€” the market just got clearer about who the real ones were.

Being good at something has never stopped being valuable. It's just gotten easier to tell who actually is.
