Our youngest Board Member, Jonathan Matson, has lived in Kent longer than everyone on the Board of Kent News, Inc., except for our President, Karen. Jonathan is a graduate of our local Marvelwood School and Champlain College in Burlington, VT. He is the Founder of Arktech Consulting Group, LLC., where he tailors IT services to serve the needs of small businesses in Connecticut and Vermont.

When Jonathan came home to Kent this past winter, he became an active member of the Kent, CT Lions Club, and recently joined the Kent CT Chamber of Commerce as their Social Media Manager. Jonathan fondly remembers the Kent Good Times Dispatch from his childhood and was ecstatic to hear about its return. He believes that the GTD is a pillar of the community and hopes that he will be able to use his technical skills to take the GTD into the modern age by making information about Kent accessible by any person on any device.

Jonathan is smart and articulate, rounding out the Board of Directors with incredible IT expertise. He is able to present information in ways that every person can understand and brings together the best parts of many ideas to move the group forward in our endeavor to bring back the GTD!

Say, "hi," with a comment below... or better yet, come meet Jonathan this weekend at the Sidewalk Sale Days! :)

We’re rounding out introductions of the four founding members of Kent News, Inc., with our Secretary, Andrea Schoeny.

When Andrea moved to Kent in late 2020, she concluded that the town needed a one-stop shop for information about local news, utilities, events, and municipal and community resources. While it was especially difficult to get acquainted with Kent due to moving during the Pandemic (and at the beginning of winter), she soon realized that there are so many events and ongoing governmental processes of which many residents, not just new ones, are unaware. She was surprised to learn that after the Kent Good Times Dispatch closed in 2009, there has been no singular news source that comprehensively covers issues unique and particular to the town of Kent. Andrea firmly believes that the re-establishment of the GTD will provide a clearinghouse for all goings-on so that we have a more informed community that is efficiently engaged in cultivating the Kent we love.

As an occupational therapist, Andrea determines the best course of action for treatment, often requiring out-of-the-box approaches to solve seemingly intractable issues. She uses the same problem-solving talents and organizational skills as the Secretary of Kent News, Inc., to engage and attract various constituencies, promoting the benefit of all parties.

Like most Millenials, she has many interests, side hustles, and projects. When she’s not working as an OT, she tutors college and high school students online, sews with the Kent Quilters, and serves on the Town of Kent,CT Main Street Noise and Traffic Subcommittee, in addition to bringing her enthusiasm and technical skills to Kent News, Inc. In her off time, you can find her at the Kent Memorial Library and the Kent CT Farmer's Market with her toddler, Ollie.

The Treasurer of Kent News, Inc., Carl Raab, splits his time between Kent and New York City. Carl loves the landscape and beautiful vistas Litchfield County has to offer. He is a passionate gardener and opens his gardens for viewing to gardening clubs in the area. Carl has written a plant identification field guide for the Northwest Connecticut Land Conservancy, which is intended for use by elementary school children.

Carl Raab is the author and editor of several high school science test prep books and textbooks. He is currently serving as an instructional and curriculum consultant at high schools in New York City. In addition, Carl is working on a proposal for the High School for Careers in Medicine and Research, in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, intended for underrepresented minority students in grades 9-12. His hope is that those who attend will be well prepared to enter college and pursue a career in medicine.

This is particularly important to Carl because he and his family have also established, in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medical College, the Joan Raab Brain Tumor Cancer Fund. He and his children hold fundraising events twice a year. The money raised is for research and development of medicines to improve the quality of life for those who are brain damaged as a result of whole brain radiation.

Carl is passionate about the development of the Kent GTD as an extraordinary newspaper which will highlight the beauty of the surroundings and the achievements of the remarkable people who live in the Kent community, and beyond.

Please give an enthusiastic hello to Carl, and if you want to know more about beautiful areas in Kent, leave a comment below!

This week, Kent News, Inc., is celebrating a special birthday–that of our President, Karen Chase. As we begin introductions of our Board of Directors, it is only fitting to start with her!

Karen Chase is a former editor, reporter, and photographer for the Kent Good Times Dispatch (1986-89 & 2006-08). Her articles and photographs have also appeared in the Litchfield County Times, the LCT Magazine, The Kent Forum, and the Kent Tribune.

It is a privilege for Karen to be part of bringing back Kent’s beloved newspaper, "The Kent Good Times Dispatch,” or as most people call it, “the GTD.” When she took on the role of editor, reporter, and photographer in 1986, Karen was new to the newspaper business. Reflecting on her time with the GTD, she says, “It was the highlight of my career when John Greene, who founded the paper with his wife Jane, sent me a note thanking me for taking good care of his newspaper. I can’t think of a better way for me to honor these two wonderful people and to serve the people of Kent than [by] bringing back the GTD.”

Additionally, Karen is an award-winning photographer and poet, a member of the Kent Art Association, and founder and host of “An Evening of Poetry and Music” at the Memorial Library. Karen is retiring at the end of June after nine years serving the Town of Kent,CT as a Registrar of Voters. She lives in the Macedonia section of Kent, in an earth-bermed house she and her late husband, Andy, built with the help of friends and their daughter Sarah.

Please help us wish Karen a very happy birthday week!
