School is starting for many, including my 9th grader Andrew. It’s exciting-a little sad summer break is ending-but a time for change and growth. Business Owners: new seasons are a great time for new looks, updates, changes, and customers. Job Seekers: Schools are hiring. Working teens are back at school and there are always people making a career change who start courses and may leave excellent jobs. I almost promise you’ll see openings in surprising places. Make calls, get good shoes, and pound the pavement during beautiful weather.

“Sunday night depression.” Common, but know as a business owner or employee, there can’t be a Friday night without a Monday morning. God bless your week!

It’s hard to work at home when there’s so much to look at. Mobile work is sought after by many, but for decades I’ve cautioned—if you take a remote job, make sure you can turn life off, focus, turn work off and still get out in the world.

My Mom Christine Husom is running for Wright County, MN Commissioner after serving 10 years and retiring from the Board. A great reminder for our lives in work, business…everything. Don’t complain or think you could help something and then sit on your couch; be proactive.

For workers and job seekers: has this screenshot become your life, or are you afraid it soon will be? AI has taken many jobs, but it can never replace all of them. My advice: think small. I will write more about this in the future.

For business owners: Do you now need to use AI? No. A resounding no, for as resounding as a Scandinavian Lutheran from MN can get. If you’re profitable & happy with things, AI doesn’t need to answer your phones. You do however, watch for yourself on social media: keep that watch because anyone can say anything. I will write about this more in upcoming posts.

Home jobs. Years before covid I wrote an article stating only about 20% of people thrive working from home. 20% can’t do it. The other 60% are in the middle. The amount and types of home jobs have exploded and keep growing. I am thankful they’ve opened the workforce. But I haven’t changed my belief. Home jobs can be extremely difficult. Millions in offices everywhere dream of ditching commuter traffic and uncomfortable clothes. Please research. #1: scam jobs abound. #2: Know your personality and home environment. Would you care if your house was a total mess, while sitting around, “doing nothing?” Could a dog or kid interrupt a zoom meeting? Would it be hard not to go for a run or go shopping; could you feel locked inside, never leaving your job and feel lonely; do you work better in a collaborative environment? Would you be tempted to wear PJs 24/7, lose normal energy and get lost in scrolling or watching YouTube videos or birds outside? That’s me. Now working from home I get dressed immediately, make my bed, brush my teeth, take exercise breaks, separate work and home and keep a schedule. I quickly attend to the dog and quickly get back to a project without losing focus. It’s a daily issue. I don’t expect it to change as long as I work from home, especially as a mom with household duties and activities. Maybe I will get an office someday. But meanwhile, rent savings and tax breaks of a home office are so nice.

For those of you with a ton of school books, old conference materials, etc., sitting in bins or on bookshelves…I got rid of probably 90% from school and old workplaces. Just kept professional documents, certificates, diplomas, awards, and portfolio. After a month, my business has not suffered. I feel better and can find items.
