A Google search for how to install Claude Code on a Mac turned into a six-stage malware attack.

That’s the real-world case our cybersecurity partner Huntress breaks down in a recent investigation.

The victim clicked a sponsored Google result while looking for Claude Code. The attack ultimately led them to a shared conversation on the real Claude domain that was disguised as an Apple Support installation guide.

The instructions looked legitimate. But following them installed MacSync, a sophisticated malware chain designed to steal browser data, logins, keychain secrets and more—and install a remote-access trojan that could give the attacker persistent access to the Mac.

What makes this story especially relevant for SMB leaders is how normal the beginning looked.

No suspicious email attachment. No obvious fake website. Just an employee searching for an AI tool and following instructions that appeared trustworthy.
