Last week, a developer lost 2.5 years of his company’s production records.  Terraform issued a ‘destroy’ operation while being run through Claude Code during an AWS migration which included the database snapshots meant to serve as backups.

Amazon support recovered the data within a day. But that recovery depended entirely on infrastructure-level backup protection that existed independently of the destroyed environment. 
This incident is a good reminder of three things worth having in place: 
- Snapshots ≠ backups. Snapshots live in the same environment they protect. Properly configured immutable backups using 3-2-1-1-0 will not be lost. 
- Delete protection needs explicit configuration. AI agents follow instructions; permissions and guardrails need to be administered 
- Restore capability needs to be tested before it’s needed. Zmanda gives you the ability to simulate restore, verifying backup integrity.
