Banks aren't just putting deposits on-chain. They're rethinking how money moves.
The signal is getting harder to ignore:
24 of the 50 largest U.S. banks are exploring tokenized deposits, up from 19 in the previous quarter.
And this is moving beyond pilots.
17 global banks prepared to test tokenized deposit transactions through Swift's blockchain-based ledger. In August, HSBC and Standard Chartered completed the first live interbank tokenized deposit transaction on the ledger.
But tokenization alone isn't the breakthrough.
The bigger challenge is interoperability.
Bank networks, blockchain infrastructure, stablecoins and existing payment rails need to work together if tokenized money is going to move efficiently across institutions.
That changes the strategic question from:
“Should banks use blockchain?”
to:
“How do we build financial infrastructure where programmable money can move across networks?”
The next evolution of payments may be less about replacing banking infrastructure and more about connecting it to on-chain rails.
