Coming off a radio filled weekend with 2 swap meets (Saturday in the Chicago area and Sunday in the Milwaukee area), I was able to sell some, and I'm now a few radios lighter. Plus I was able to pick up this gem.... a Red & White1959 Majestic "Black Magic" model 900 transistor table radio in a screaming MCM design. This was produced at a time when many manufacturers were starting to get into using transistors instead of vacuum tubes. It is powered by six "D" cell batteries in series (9 volts total), and even still had the decades old Eveready "Leak Proof" batteries installed from what I would guess were of 1970s vintage. Good thing they lived up to their "Leak Proof" name. When I installed a fresh set of batteries, this radio still plays well.

Here is a 1963 Clock radio that looks like it could've just came off of Grandma's nightstand. It's an Admiral model Y3783, which is a little too posh for my taste, with its ornate interlocking small circles all over the entirety of the front grill, giving it a lacey look. Though, I do really like the large oval clock though with is Westclox movement and the original power plug with the Admiral logo on it.
Actually, I believe this one has been stored away for most of its 60+ year existence. There is minimal wear to the cabinet, barely any dust or dirt inside the cabinet, and it has all 5 original Admiral brand vacuum tubes which all tested extremely good (like brand new). There are no signs of any heat wear that one would normally see, to any of the components or the printed circuit board.
I brought it up slowly on a variac, and when it powered on, there was just the typical AC hum, so I replaced the 2 section paper & wax filter capacitor with modern equivalents. This thing now plays with great sound and reception up & down the AM dial.

I restored this 1954 Zenith Clock radio today. It's a 1954 model L520G in a Light Grayish Green color, that has the typical AA5 tube Chassis layout. This model has a single 4" speaker and a Telechron clock movement. After replacing 2 bad tubes, and all the original paper & wax capacitors, it now plays with great reception & sound up and down the AM dial. Zenith made this particular model (Chassis 5L07) in many different color combinations. I have posted here on March 17, 2026 featuring the Shamrock Green one from my collection.

Here is a lunch box style portable radio that I can truly say, I never knew existed until I discovered & bought this particular one on Monday. This is a 1948 Garod "Starlet" model 4B-1 in a two-tone vivid Blue & Ivory. This is not a painted radio, rather the color is molded right into the plastic.
I especially dig the ridges in the plastic on the front & back of the case, radiating up from the "Garod" name at the bottom, just like beams of sunlight at dawn. Its a battery only set, utilizing a 67.5 VDC battery for the "B" Voltage and three 1.5 VDC D-cell batteries in parallel for the "A" voltage. It has a 4 tube chassis with the 3S4, 1R5, 1L4, 1S5 vacuum tube lineup.

I recently acquired this 1967 Sony model 8R-42 eight transistor radio in a striking shade of Reddish Orange. Its an AM only and has very nice sound and reception. On the backboard is printed "Insect Proof" and was wondering what the manufacturer did to make it insect proof?
I've seen radios before from Philco and Norelco that were "Tropicalized", which is a radio receiver that is specially designed and constructed to withstand the harsh conditions of tropical environments, including high humidity, heat, and potential for fungal growth. This is achieved through various protective measures like sealing components, using special coatings and materials, and ensuring the radio's internal components are resistant to moisture and corrosion.
So what does Insect Proofing entail?

Here are a few Admiral radios from 1958 with a nice mid-century design & great colors. They all use the same Chassis (5D4) which is the standard AA5 tube layout. The Beige one & the two-tone Slate /Seafoam clock version I've had for quite a while. The Turquoise one & the Red one I recently acquired from fellow collector Gordon in Pittsburgh.

Here is a not often seen radio from Truetone that I recently obtained for my collection. Its 1959, Model D2834B in a Battleship Gray, with a White Grill, highlighted by a Red Volume k**b...Very striking in a subtle manner! It has a 6 tube chassis pushing its sound out of Twin speakers.

Happy Easter to Everyone! ✝️🐰🐣 Brought out my 1957 Truetone model DC2855 in pastel green to celebrate. This simple radio I got from my friend Don Denny in March of 2019. It has great mid-century lines and an AA5 tube chassis.
