Most healthcare organizations know the HIPAA Security Rule updates are coming, but fewer have mapped out what it actually costs to ignore them.

Failing to implement mandatory controls after the effective date qualifies as willful neglect under HIPAA, with penalties ranging from $14,232 to over $2 million per violation. Cyber insurers may deny claims if required controls weren't in place at the time of a breach. And business associates may walk away from organizations that can't demonstrate compliance.

Aaron Cowell joined Vertilocity through this summer's acquisition of Computol, bringing nearly a decade of experience across quoting, professional services, service desk, and compliance management. But his path into IT started even earlier, back in 2006 as a work-study student at Davis College. Six months in, a major campus network outage gave him his first real test. Aaron restored it within hours and documented procedures to prevent it from happening again, a moment that turned into an 11-year run modernizing the college's technology.

Outside of work, Aaron's a longtime animal person. He competed in Hunter Jumper and Hunter Under Saddle as a teen, and today he's hatched and raised everything from chickens to pheasants. When he's not off-roading or camping, he's usually tinkering with a random IoT project.
