If you click on a link in your email and give away any information like a user name and password or a code that you get on your phone, find a “fraud hotline” number for the company in question and report what happened - do not use the number in the email. If you can, log into the actual company website - search for it separately – and change your password and any security questions. Keep a close watch on your banking / tax information.

While browsing the internet, does it seem like the advertisers know you a little too well?

One way to cut back on those targeted ads is to use the 'private' or 'incognito' mode on your browser (Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc) which is found under the 'File' menu.

Another way is to use a Virtual Private Netowrk or VPN. A VPN hides your computer address from the internet – similar to dialing *67 on your phone - and encrypts the information that goes to and from your computer – kind of like taking your messages and putting them in a cryptoquip, in an envelope, in a tunnel.

You can also search the phone number and the word ‘scam’ to see if the number is legitimate or not.

If you have devices you control through your phone (doorbell cameras, thermostats, baby monitors, security systems, etc) change the default password on the device. The default password is often written in the instruction manual and with instruction manuals available on-line, anyone has access.

To create an easy-to-remember, hard-to-guess password, consider using a line from your favorite book or song or use random words and add some numbers and special characters

Book or song example: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" can be "1Wt8Ot,Iw7Wo7" (number / capital letter / small letter) punctuation (capital letter / small letter / number) line from A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens, 1859
