🔐 Cybersecurity Myth vs. Fact

Cybersecurity is full of misconceptions that can leave businesses vulnerable.

❌ "We're too small to be a target."
❌ "I have antivirus, so I'm fully protected."
❌ "Cybersecurity is IT's responsibility."

✅ The reality? Cybercriminals target organizations of all sizes, effective security requires multiple layers of protection, and every employee plays a role in keeping a business secure.

Strong cybersecurity isn't built on assumptions. It's built on awareness, proactive protection, and a strategy that addresses both technology and human risk.

At Alpine, our Peak Protection approach helps businesses strengthen their security posture through layered defenses, continuous monitoring, employee education, and expert guidance, because staying secure takes more than a single tool or solution.

How many of these myths have you heard before?

This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we're celebrating more than technology. We're celebrating partnerships. 🔐

Recently, a longtime Alpine client took the next step in strengthening their cybersecurity posture. Together, we modernized their security environment, deploying advanced monitoring and protection that delivered immediate visibility into risks that previously went unseen.

By combining modern email security, threat detection, vulnerability management, and ongoing collaboration with leadership, we helped enhance security without disrupting day-to-day operations.

The best cybersecurity strategies aren't built overnight. They're built on trust, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

After 25 years of partnership, we're honored to help position this client for the next 25 years of success.

This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, it's a great reminder that protecting your business isn't just about stopping threats. It's about building a stronger foundation for the future.

Some free VPNs make money by letting other people send traffic through your internet connection.
Google recently took down a large network that used devices running apps advertised as free VPNs.
While the VPN worked, the app also allowed other customers' internet traffic to pass through the device.
On a work laptop, that traffic would appear to come from your company's public IP address. Your IP could get blocked because of activity nobody in the business carried out.
Google also found that some of this software could expose other devices on the same network.
➡Check which VPNs and browser extensions are installed on company devices.
➡Staff should use the VPN provided by the business, not one they found online because it was free.
⚠Want to know whether unapproved VPNs or proxy software are installed on your company devices? Reach out and we can check for you.

⚠Don't trust hotel Wi-Fi.
It can be compromised even when you've joined the correct network.

Microsoft has found attackers taking control of the systems used for Wi-Fi login pages at hotels and conference venues.
Once the login system has been compromised, guests can be redirected to a fake Microsoft 365 sign-in page or shown a fake browser update that installs malware. The timing makes the request believable. You've just connected, the hotel page opens and it says an update is needed before you can continue. Checking the network name with reception won't help because the hotel's real Wi-Fi is involved.

What Should You Do?
Use your phone's hotspot for work whenever possible. If you have to use hotel Wi-Fi, never enter your work password into the hotel registration page.
And if the page asks you to download an update, certificate or security tool, disconnect. Joining Wi-Fi shouldn't require you to install anything.

If your staff travel with work laptops, send us a message before their next trip. We'll make sure the devices are properly protected.

Our CEO and Founder, Bill Blum, met with the Taiwan Economic Development team and AI business leaders from Taiwan at the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey.

On Monday, CIANJ members met with a Taiwanese Delegation to discuss potential partnerships and business development in New Jersey. Representatives from Acer Medical and Chunghwa Telecom Co talked about starting operations in the Garden State. Acer Medical focuses on using AI technologies to advance medical treatments and awareness and Chunghwa focuses on smart technologies used in the transportation and logistics field such as smart traffic lights. We look forward to continuing to build relationships that support business growth both here in New Jersey and abroad.
