Gallup just published its 2026 workplace data: manager engagement fell from 31% in 2022 to 22% in 2025. Nine points in three years, with the steepest drop happening last year alone.
Everyone else held roughly flat.
That gap had a name, the "engagement premium." Being a manager used to come with more ownership, more visibility, more reason to care. Now managers are barely more engaged than the people they lead.
Nothing was taken away from them. Things were added. More scope, more reports, more change to absorb, more tools to roll out.
We kept adding to their plate. Nobody measured the plate.
If your managers are the most loaded people in your org, are they also the least measured?
